HiSilicon Kirin 985 to be manufactured with 5G modem from Q3 2019: Report

Huawei’s HiSilicon Kirin 985 chipset will be manufactured with 5G modem using Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company's (TSMC's) new 7nm fabrication process, and it will go into mass production from the third quarter of this year, a media report in CNMO.com has said. TSMC will use 7nm Extreme UltraViolet (EUV) process (called N7+), along with the Flip-Chip Package-on-Package (FC-PoP) process that allows vertical stacking of transistors.

A combination of EUV (which increases the accuracy of transistor placement) and FC-PoP manufacturing processes means that the transistor density on the chip will be increased by 20 percent resulting in better performance and lower energy consumption. The news comes almost two weeks after a report in Chinese news outlet Commercial Times claimed the Kirin 985 chipset will enter into mass production in the second half of 2019.

Further, it has been reported that Huawei will bring the HiSilicon Kirin 985 in the Mate 30 series of phones. The first mention of Kirin chips with 5G modems was back in November when it was thought that Kirin 990 will succeed the Kirin 980. Interestingly, CNMO.com was also the source of the development. It said that HiSilicon had invested around CNY200 million (approx Rs 209 crore) in research and development of the processor.

As mentioned, the next Kirin flagship is touted to feature the Balong 5000 modem, which Huawei announced alongside the Kirin 980, to help achieve 5G speeds. Huawei said that the Balong 5000 supports 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G on a single chip, and reduces latency as well as power consumption when exchanging data between different modes. At Sub-6 GHz (low-frequency bands, the main spectrum used for 5G), it is claimed that the Balong 5000 can achieve download speeds up to 4.6 Gbps. On mmWave spectrum (high-frequency bands used as extended spectrum for 5G), Balong 5000 is said to achieve download speeds up to 6.5 Gbps, which is 10 times faster than top 4G LTE speeds.

OnePlus 7 Pro camera was used to shoot the cover of Harpers Bazaar May 2019 issue

The OnePlus 7 launch is looming large over us and every few days, a new feature of the upcoming flagship is being disseminated by the brand to create hype leading up to the launch. After announcing that the OnePlus 7 Pro’s display has been rated A+ by DisplayMate, and confirming triple cameras on the back via a newspaper ad, it was revealed the latest cover photo of Harper’s Bazaar magazine was shot using the OnePlus 7 Pro.

The magazine announced on social media that the cover photo of their latest issue featuring actor and activist Jameela Jamil, was shot using the OnePlus 7 Pro. The actor insisted that the photos required no digital retouching or airbrushing.

The photograph was shot with Jameela in Los Angeles, on a rooftop terrace, according to an ANI report.

“It’s a picture-perfect camera, and the output was amazing. I could not believe we had an option to shoot RAW images without having to connect it to an app or computer. We used the photo to capture behind-the-scenes clips and notcied the video was even better,” Harper’s Bazaar’s creative director said in a press release.

This is not the first time OnePlus has collaborated with a fashion magazine to show off its camera prowess. Back when the OnePlus 6 was launching, the company did a similar collaboration with Vogue India magazine where actor Aditi Rao Hyadri’s photograph was taken with the OnePlus 6 for the magazine’s cover photo for the May 2018 issue.

We have asked OnePlus for a comment regarding the use of professional lighting, post-processing and the exif inforrmation of the photo. The article will be updated with more information as and when we receive it.

OnePlus 7 Pro camera specs

The cover photo indicates the OnePlus 7 Pro will come with a better camera sensor that can shoot in RAW format. The phone might even offer new lenses. So far, OnePlus has confirmed that the OnePlus 7 Pro’s camera will offer 3x zoom as well as a triple-camera setup on the back. This was also confirmed by the full-page ad on the New York Times on Tuesday where the company published the schematics of the upcoming flagship. The schematics reveal that the OnePlus 7 Pro will not only come with a triple-camera setup, but also sport a pop-up selfie camera, allowing the display to stretch entirely to the edges.

While we are still awaiting key details of the camera hardware, the photo makes us expect a good improvement in camera performance over the OnePlus 6T. The phone is likely to bring better zoom as well as better low-light shooting capabilities as indicated by an image shared by OnePlus product manager Szymon Kopec on Twitter.

It’s likely that the OnePlus 7 Pro will incorporate the 48MP Sony IMX586 sensor that’s also there on the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pro and the Honor View20. Furthermore, a 16MP wide-angel camera is also expected as part of the camera stack along with an 8MP telephoto lens offering 3X zoom.

Alongside the OnePlus 7 Pro, the company is also expected to launch the OnePlus 7, marking the first time that the company will launch two phones under one series. The OnePlus 7, based on leaks and rumours, is likely to come with a dual-camera unit.

OnePlus 7 Pro specs

In addition to an upgraded camera, the OnePlus 7 and the OnePlus 7 Pro, like all its predecessor, will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855. Furthermore, the phone is expected to come with a display with a refresh rate of 90Hz which should result in a smoother viewing experience. Apart from this, we expect the upcoming flagships to offer at least 6GB of RAM and 128GB storage, along with an in-display fingerprint sensor and Warp Charging.

OnePlus 7 launch

The OnePlus 7 and the OnePlus 7 Pro will be announced simultaneously in three cities — Bangalore, New York and London on May 14. Fans can buy tickets for the Bangalore event from the company’s e-commerce site, and those won’t be able to attend the launch in person can tune in to a live stream. The event starts at 8:15PM.

Realme X will be the companys upcoming phone to feature bezel-less display, pop-up camera

Realme is expanding its services and products to the Chinese market and it recently posted a new teaser video on its Weibo page. The video also showed off a new phone that is the company’s first handset to feature a nearly bezel-less design and a pop-up front facing camera. The phone was linked to the Realme handset featuring model number RMX1901, which showed up on a TENAA listing as the images on the registration website closely resembles the handset shown in the video. Now, the company’s Chief Marketing Officer, Xu Qi Chase, has confirmed via a Weibo post that the company’s upcoming phone would be called the Realme X.

It is highly possible that the smartphone with a pop-up camera in the Realme promo video is the Realme X. Qi’s post also suggests that the Realme X is a bezel-less display that delivers a full-screen experience. As per the TENAA listing, the handset might come equipped with a 6.5-inch display OLED display that sports a Full HD+ resolution. The images hint at the absence of a notch, again hinting at the presence of a pop-up camera for the front shooter. Additionally, no rear-mounted fingerprint sensor can be spotted on the phone’s back and the device is speculated to come equipped with an in-display fingerprint sensor.

The upcoming Realme handset is rumoured to be a flagship device, which could be running on the latest Snapdragon 855 SoC. Images of the phone via TENAA suggest it could come equipped with a dual-rear camera setup and a single 16MP sensor on the front that is housed within the notch. The phone might be backed by a 3680 mAh battery,  that is said to support VOOC fast charging. It is expected to launch running on ColorOS 6, on top of Android 9 Pie.

In other Realme news, the company’s latest phone in India, the Realme 3 Pro has received a new software update. The new patch enables recording super slow-motion videos on the device, which are shot at 960 fps. Additionally, the update brings improvements to the phone’s camera and adds to the system’s stability. The latest update patch for the device was rolled out on the same day it was made available for purchase for the first time in the country.

Data breach exposes details of 80 million US households on Microsoft servers

US-based firm vpnMentor's research team has discovered a hack that has exposed a database of 80 million (nearly 65 percent) American households. The unprotected 24GB database, hosted on Microsoft Cloud servers, includes the number of people living in each household with their full names, their marital status, income bracket, age, and more. While some information is available freely, other data like title, gender, etc are coded.

What’s interesting is that the database is still unidentified, however, given the terminology used (like “member_code” and “score”), it appears that this database belongs to some kind of service that has members in it and they get scores. vpnMentor believes that it is the first time a breach of this size has included peoples’ names, addresses, and income, and dubs the open database as a goldmine for identity thieves and other attackers.

How can this impact users?

This type of open database can give access to users’ full name that can be used to guess their email addresses. “Many people use name.familyname@gmail.com as their email address. While this makes sense, it also makes you easy to identify,” the firm said. Users can also become vulnerable to phishing scams, and ransomware. With access to the information related to their income information, attackers will be well aware of how much they can extort money out of the victims.

Real world threat

If you search a person with his/her name and city on Google, scores of links (like profiles and photos on social media platforms) open up revealing a lot about that person. “Let’s assume you haven’t updated the security settings on your Facebook profile for a while, so your posts are visible to people you’re not friends with. Everything you post is open to the internet – including the vacation photos you uploaded that morning. The geotag shows that you’re thousands of miles away from home,” the firm said. Since there’s a full address in the database, thieves know where you live, and a quick Google search has shown that you are not at home, you automatically become a prime target for attack.

vpnMentor says that it wants to contact this database’s owners, and is seeking help “solve the riddle”.

Samsung patent hints at a smartphone with wraparound display

Global smartphone shipments continue to decline and phone manufacturers have realised that there’s a dire need for innovation in their offerings. Samsung is one of the companies that is working on a foldable phone with the hope of offering a new take on the same old form factor. While the super expensive Samsung Galaxy Fold is off to a rocky start, it seems like the South Korean tech company might soon look into other ideas. As per a new patent filed by the company, reported by LetsGoDigital, it might be working on a handset where the display wraps around an edge and extends to the device’s back. The patent is titled 'Electronic Device Having Plurality of Display and Method for Controlling Same'.

The patent images suggest Samsung could be working on a design that is somewhat similar to the Vivo Nex Dual Display smartphone. However, while the Vivo Nex features a secondary display on the back, the Samsung patent suggests that there could be three edges that sport a display. The patent describes the phone with "a display configured to include a first surface in a first direction, a second surface in a second direction opposite to the first direction, and a third surface enclosing at least a portion of the space formed between the first surface and the second surface." This third surface could be an edge that connects the first and second surface.

The drawings above suggest how the displays on the phone could be used to capture photos or quickly glance at a notification. If Samsung does end up integrating the patented design, it would be interesting to see how it is actually implemented. When spent some time with the Vivo Nex Dual Display, we found that the dual display on the device was useful in only a handful of situations. You can read our feature on the Vivo Nex Dual Display here.
