Instagram green dot shows you who’s online

Facebook upset a lot of fans when the company moved its messaging capabilities to Messenger instead of retaining them within the core app. The anger stems from the fact that users want more capabilities in fewer apps. Too many apps consume storage space on mobile devices. Social apps are storage-eaters. Facebook’s core app has also been a battery guzzler, and users feared that Facebook Messenger would prove no different. With Facebook Messenger set aside as the messaging app, the Mark Zuckerberg-led company has continued making improvements and tweaks. Among those, Facebook has added a green notification dot for friend notifications. Though the social photo app Instagram is also owned by Facebook, the parent company has yet to gain this feature. Fortunately, the Instagram green dot is now making its way to users.

Today we’re making it easier to connect with friends on Instagram by showing you when they’re available to chat. When your friends are active on Instagram, you’ll see a green dot next to their profile picture in various spaces within the app, including the Direct inbox and your friend list when you share a post from feed,

Instagram wrote in its press release announcing the new social media feature.

What is the Instagram green dot?

The Instagram green dot does nothing more than let you know when someone you’re friends or family with is online. The green dot will appear at the bottom of the friend profile pic. With that said, keep in mind that you can also hide when you’re active. You can also turn off the Instagram green dot notification if you so choose.

Instagram improvements for users

The Facebook company continues to lead the way in social media adoption despite the recent Cambridge Analytica Scandal. Instagram has added GIFs in Stories this year, allowing users to interact with one of the mobile world’s most favorite expressive go-tos.

In April, Instagram unleashed its new Focus feature that applies a blurry, Bokeh effect to photos taken with the app. Blurred backgrounds are a trademark of professional photos and add a unique perspective to the mood of any photo. Alongside the new Focus feature (aka Bokeh effect), Instagram also added an @mention tag so that users could interact with friends and contacts on the platform.

In May, Facebook improved Instagram by enabling multiple photo and video uploads to Instagram Stories. Previously, users had to upload photos and videos one-by-one. The new feature ensures that users need not take forever to share events and moments. Shorter photo and video upload times encourage greater platform adoption. Facebook’s F8 2018 conference brought AR Filters and Spotify and GoPro integrations to Instagram.

Instagram TV (IGTV) created as a mobile photo/video rival

One month ago, Instagram challenged YouTube and Snapchat with its new Instagram TV (or IGTV) vertical-scrolling video app. The new IGTV app is only for mobile photos and videos, those shot on smartphones, rather than photos and videos on other devices. This is how one can tell that IGTV was designed to be a YouTube/Snapchat challenger: it only allows mobile user data for uploading. Currently, users can provide up to 10 minutes of video footage, though Instagram says that users will soon be able to provide up to an hour of video footage through the IGTV app.

Facebook purchased photo filter app Instagram on April 9, 2012 for $1 billion total, including $300 million in cash and the rest in Facebook stock. Instagram now has over a billion users (as does Facebook), with 300 million additional users added earlier this year in a matter of three months.
