VLC Player For iOS Gets Chromecast Support: Improved Audio Quality, 360 Video Support And Other Features Included In Latest Stable Version

The VLC Player was recently updated for Apple iOS devices. Moving ahead, Apple iPhone and iPad users will have access to several improved features, including enhanced audio playback, option to view 360 videos, etc. The refined and stable version, VLC for iOS 3.1.0, includes several bug fixes as well.

It has been a rather long time since VLC 3.0 was released. Back in February, a substantial version revision for the VLC took place. The updates were launched across Android, iOS, macOS, Windows, Android, Apple TV, and Chrome OS. The platform claimed to have addressed and fixed about 1,500 bugs. Back then the app received experimental Chromecast support, along with HDR and 360-degree videos.

The significant major update of the immensely popular open-source VLC media player for all platforms was called Vetinari. Although Android users rejoiced, Apple iOS users had to wait six long months for the stable release in the final form.

VLC’s Latest Version For iOS Brings Much-Needed Improvements And Bug Fixes:

The latest version of VLC Player for iOS brings with it several features and bug fixes. The new app, available on the Apple App Store, now offers support for Chromecast. With VLC version 3.1 on iOS, users are now able to cast content stored on their iPhone or iPad directly to their television set. The ability to stream however, requires a Chromecast device or the TV must have the functionality built-in. Interestingly, several iOS VLC users had strongly requested Chromecast support .

The app also features significantly improved audio playback quality. Also, the new version allows iOS users to view 360 videos by moving their iPhones. While this may seem trivial, earlier, users had to manually swipe the screen to change the angle of view.

Several iOS users had previously complained about some very strange and rather disturbing bugs in the VLC app. While some files were merely invisible when accessed within VLC, other downloaded media sometimes simply vanished. Strangely, VLC sometimes prevented the download of certain media files via http. Some users were unable to log on to their Google Drive, which prevented streaming.

VLC has assured that it has fixed all of the aforementioned bugs, and then some more. In addition to the bug fixes, the latest version of VLC player has robust support for H.264/H.265 encoded videos. The player now smoothly decodes the H.264/H.265 videos in hardware mode.

VLC Doesn’t Tolerate Its Processes Terminated By Huawei:

Just a couple of days back, VLC decided to block certain new Huawei phones on the Google Play Store. This effectively prevents certain Huawei smartphones from downloading the VLC Media Player app through the app store. It appears Huawei’s aggressive battery management tool has the ability of disrupting VLC’s audio playback.

Huawei smartphones tend to target and terminate non-Huawei applications when they consume more than a certain amount of system resources in the background. In the case of the VLC Media Player app for Android, the part of the application responsible for audio playback in videos ended up being classified as a resource hungry background activity. Needless to mention, certain Huawei smartphones began terminating the audio processing. In other words, users began to experience complete audio loss while watching videos.

As a result of several VLC player’s Android users watching videos with abruptly muted audio, VLC officially prevented the offending Huawei’s devices on Google Play Store. Apparently, VLC wants to send Huawei a strong message.

Fortunately, VLC still allows users to download the official APK setup file directly from the open source project’s website. The platform assures that the VLC Player has always been an open source project, and will continue to remain easily accessible.
