Just a few days ago, we gave you a first look at Google Maps in Apple CarPlay. At that time, the iOS 12 update hadn’t rolled out, but it has now. Yes, CarPlay customers can use third-party mapping services such as Google Maps and Waze in the new update.

While Apple CarPlay is Apple’s “iOS in the Car” solution, Apple Maps still don’t hold a candle to Google Maps. Google has been developing its Maps service for at least eight years, making it the best in the field. When you add Waze integration (yes, Waze is a Google company as well), it doesn’t get any better on the road than driving with Google. And now, you can have both companies at your fingertips. You no longer need compromise with Apple, but of course, this acknowledges the superiority of Google Maps.

While Google Maps integration is CarPlay-ready, Waze integration is not. For those who want their up-to-the-minute traffic accident alerts, you’ll have to wait a while longer.

This summer, Apple announced at WWDC 2018 that it was giving the green light to Google Maps and Waze CarPlay integration, so we’re not surprised to see the iOS 12 rollout. While Apple is giving a nod to Google with its Maps and Waze services, there are Android companies giving the green light to Apple CarPlay. Among these are Sony with its XAV-AX5000 infotainment system, and Samsung-owned HARMAN with its wireless CarPlay infotainment system.

Apple announced iOS 12 this summer but released an official public beta in July. The third public beta was released at July’s end.

iOS 12 brings a dozen new features to iPhone and iPad users, such as FaceTime audio for up to 32 people, Screen Time (a way for users to see what they’re doing with their battery life), more flexible notification management, Do Not Disturb Scheduling, Siri App shortcuts, and more.
