Airtel has been offering flagship smartphones under EMI scheme on its Online Store for the past few years. That said, the EMI offer was only applicable for its post-paid users, and prepaid users were pretty much left out. Now, Airtel seems to have changed their mind, and the telecom operator has listed three smartphones under the EMI scheme on its online store for prepaid customers.
The Airtel down payment cum EMI scheme was launched to woo consumers to its own network by bundling in their data plans with the cost of the phone. Under this scheme, buyers can own a flagship device of their choice at just a fraction of a price, but they are then indebted to pay Airtel the remaining sum of money in 12 monthly installments. The installment charges also bear the cost of the data and calling plan being offered by the telecom operator to its customers. The scheme is in line with the one run by AT&T and Sprint in the US.
Previously, Airtel was offering Unlimited calling, 50GB of monthly data along with Airtel TV subscription with a number of smartphones. Some devices are even offered with 100GB data/month, a free handset protection plan and an Amazon Prime subscription.
Airtel Offering Select Smartphones Under EMI Scheme to its Prepaid Users
Recently, Airtel listed three new smartphones namely Oppo F9 Pro, Nokia 6.1 and Nokia 7 Plus under this EMI scheme. The best part, however, is the fact that any Airtel consumers can now opt for these smartphones under the company’s monthly EMI scheme. That said, the tariff plan and the net price of the smartphone vary depending on the user’s current relationship with Airtel – Postpaid or Prepaid. This makes it really hassle-free for an Airtel Prepaid loyalist to opt for a new smartphone for their carrier. All they need to do is to apply for a smartphone on Airtel’s official online store and complete the formalities.

Airtel is offering a pretty competitive tariff for prepaid users who decided to opt for either of these phones. The plan includes unlimited calling, 1.4GB/day data, and 100 SMS. This tariff plan will be activated automatically every month for a period of 1 year once you clear the monthly EMI of your smartphone.
Airtel Online Store Smartphone EMI Offer: Buy an Oppo F9 Pro for just Rs 6,015
By opting for this scheme, Airtel prepaid consumers can own the Oppo F9, Nokia 6.1 and Nokia 7 Plus with an initial down payment of Rs 6,015, Rs 4,599 and Rs 7,699 respectively. Subsequently, lenders would need to pay a monthly EMI of Rs 1,714 (Oppo F9), Rs 1,275 (Nokia 6.1) and Rs 1,734 (Nokia 7.1 Plus). It’s worth noting this new Airtel scheme greatly elevates the asking price of the smartphone, but that’s somehow expected considering Airtel is bearing the risk of your EMI. The Oppo F9 Pro, for example, cost Rs 23,990 when bought outright either from an online or offline retail channel. The same smartphone, when bought under this Airtel EMI offer, costs Rs 26,583. The Nokia 7. 1 Plus, on the other hand, costs Rs 28,507 when bought from Airtel as compared to the standard market price of Rs 25,999.
Airtel’s inclusion of Prepaid users under its EMI scheme is expected to help increase it user base, which has been so far depleting due the rapid expansion of Mukesh Ambani led Jio. That said, with e-commerce platforms like Amazon and Flipkart offering hassle-free debit card based EMIs, it would be interesting to see whether Airtel succeeds in attracting many takers for its new scheme.
