There has been significant breakthrough achieved by major camera manufacturers such as Nikon, Sony, and Canon, when it comes to the mirrorless camera industry. All three of these companies have successfully manufactured and sold mirrorless cameras and have created a space for themselves in the industry. However, they may face a severe amount of competition in the near future in this space, as there are several players that seem keen to join them with their own mirrorless cameras.
New entrant in the mirrorless camera industry:
There are some strong rumors doing the rounds that suggest that Panasonic, Leica, and Sigma are collaborating jointly to launch a new venture that would produce the mirrorless camera. The latest buzz is that the three electronics giants are working on a mirrorless camera that is based on Leica’s SL mount. The device was originally meant to be used for the Leica T mount.
Instead, the company rebranded this device as the L mount, when it had announced that it would be venturing into the SL full frame mirrorless camera segment in 2015. The brand TL is used on APS C lenses when used on the mount and the brand SL is used for full frame lenses used on the mount.
Online electronics rumor site, who had suggested with 100% certainty that the companies were collaborating on a mirrorless camera commented on this project “While it’s obvious that Leica and Panasonic will both make cameras and lenses it’s still unclear if Sigma will make SL cameras too. But I have been told this is a ‘deep’ partnership and definitely much more than just making SL mount versions of current Sigma lenses.”
This is certainly good news for consumers in this space, as their options are currently limited to three vendors, all of whom have set extremely high prices for mirrorless cameras owing to limited competition and lack of visible alternative products in this segment.
The Joint Venture:
With the introduction of this joint venture, there will be yet another player to offer mirrorless cameras. The three companies can leverage each other’s technological capabilities and brand presence in order to achieve product quality and market reach in order to compete with the likes of Sony, Nikon, and Canon.
There was originally some suggestions that Panasonic would be launching its own full-frame mirrorless camera this month, just a day before the Photokina trade show that is set to take place in Germany from tomorrow. However, now it looks like this plan is taking a backseat and the company will not instead work on the collaborative effort.

New SL Mount full frame cameras:
Now instead of the full frame mirrorless camera, it is suggested that the company will instead be launching two new SL mount full frame cameras as a part of this partnership. These devices are all set to come with a host of features including 4K60p video recording capabilities and in body image stabilization (IBIS).
Furthermore, these devices are expected to be similar to its competitor’s products – Nikon’s Z6 and Z7, which were only recently launched by the Japanese company. The new cameras are supposed to be one low-resolution recording, high resolution (being more than 50 megapixels) and an entry-level professional body as well.
The devices are currently being tested with prototypes and non-finalized specs and Panasonic is expected to launch the device sometime in March 2019.
