Jio Showcases 5G Use Cases at India Mobile Congress; Includes Connected Cars, and VR-assisted Bus Driving

5G connectivity is at the threshold of being introduced and even becoming mainstream. In fact, 4G LTE has become a standard and accessible to almost the entire Indian population. Just like Samsung, Reliance Jio is at the forefront of ushering in a new era of 5G connectivity. Reliance Jio has used IMC 2018 as a platform to showcase the use of 5G in various applications apart from smartphones. Even smartphones of 2019 will most likely support 5G networks. The first ever phone to support it will be the 5G variant of the Mi MIX 3. At IMC 2018, Reliance Jio partnered with three global companies for the demo of its 5G technology.

Jio Showcases Its 5G Technology In Various Cases At IMC 2018

At IMC 2018, Reliance Jio along with Ericsson showcased 5G live use cases as a part of its demo. In simple terms, the demo focuses on showing the key capabilities of 5G technology in terms of its gigabit speed and ultra-low latencies in areas like the operation of various machines and also the possibilities and future of Virtual Reality (VR). Jio has made use of two instances to showcase just how good 5G technology can get.

For this, Ericsson and Jio jointly demonstrated how a car can be remotely controlled and operated. This is done using a live 5G network on a 3.5GHz band. While this may seem like a very normal scenario considering that automated cars have been available for a while, it does deserve to be credited, given how seamlessly it does it. Perhaps that’s the crux of this demonstration. Jio wants to focus on the reliability of the 5G network. Using the 5G connected car it tries to show the audience how high data rate capability and low latency of 5G technology could be beneficial in everyday life.

Reliance Jio took it a bit further to showcase the vast possibilities which 5G can bring to virtual reality. In order to do this, the telecommunication company displayed VR-assisted driving of a bus. To make this demonstration possible, a camera is mounted in the bus, and streaming takes place over the 5G network. The bus driver uses this live stream to navigate and drive the bus using a 5G connected VR headset. VR along with the application of 5G technology can even be used to train employees, teachers, and even teach students more effectively and efficiently, providing them with a realistic and first-hand experience of it.

Jio Preparing For The 5G Connectivity Era

Reliance Jio is making remarkable progress in leaps and bounds in terms of 5G networks. In all likelihood, we may even see 5G SIM cards arriving shortly. The jump from 3G technology to 4G brought about various changes in internet speed and reliability. Perhaps, the switch to 5G will definitely be worth it as Jio envisions a futuristic world with it. The future of 5G has been best summed up by Mathew Oommen, President, Reliance Jio, when he said:
