Google Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL Soon to Get an Update to Keep Background Apps From Being Prematurely Closed

Google has reiterated that it will roll out a new software update which will resolve a bug related to the issue of background apps closing prematurely in the Google Pixel 3 and the Pixel 3 XL (Review) phones.

Users of these new flagship phones have been plagued by this issue since the launch of the phones in early October 2018, and they do not seem to be any happier about Google’s promise of the software update. The reason: Google first promised a software update to fix this issue about a month ago, and nothing has been done yet, except for a reiteration of the promise. If you haven’t encountered this problem yet, read on to know what’s going on.

Google Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL: The RAM Management Problem

The said statement from Google, seen on Twitter yesterday, came as a response to a tech buff’s complaint about background apps disappearing. “How is it possible that my iPhone XR keeps all my games and apps in memory but the minute I leave 1 game on the Pixel 3 XL and it closes it. Had enough now,” wrote Brendan (@wildlime).

Google Store’s official international Twitter handle called Made By Google (@madebygoogle) quickly responded, saying: “Hi Brendan, we’re rolling out a software update in the coming weeks to keep background apps from being prematurely closed in certain situations. Appreciate your understanding.

Brendan responded to Google saying he looks forward to trying the update but that he cannot trust the device in the meantime, so he won’t be using it until the said update arrives. However, it appears that not all users of Pixel phones are being that patient. Why? Well, read on.

Google Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL: The Bigger Problem

The response given by Google irked more users than it placated. By stating that a software update will be rolled out “in the coming weeks”, the American tech giant has refrained from providing any clear timeline, and also repeated the same thing it said about a month ago. If you remember, we had also reported the same then.

One Reddit user, responding to a discussion around this tweet, made a sharp point. Technically, he said all future weeks are coming weeks. Another tech enthusiast Amol Mahajan (@blaze_2111) on Twitter lashed out at Google over the delay in detecting the issue. Android 9 Pie itself has been riddled with issues ever since its launch, he said. Zee Faizi (@ZeeFaizi) took to sarcasm in response, reminding Made By Google that the same promise of a software update was given weeks ago. “Doing a great job sending out half-baked product out in the market,” he added. Yikes!

On November 6, we had reported that Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL users were complaining of background apps closing prematurely and that Google had given a statement to fix the issue via a software update. Then, too, the company’s only hint at a possible time of rollout was the ambiguous phrase “in the coming weeks”.

Primarily, the problem of background apps closing off was noted by users who were listening to music and taking pictures simultaneously. This was resulting in the shutting down of the music app(s) running in the background, but other users reported that the problem was of RAM mismanagement and that multitasking on the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL was affected in more ways than one. Google had acknowledged the problem but had not given any clarity on what was causing the issue and why. Since then, it has already been four weeks since Google’s first response. Let’s just hope that the coming weeks are really coming soon.
