If you happen to own the Mi A1 or the old Redmi Note 3 from Xiaomi, here’s some good news for you. Owners of both these handsets have confirmed that Xiaomi has started issuing OTA software updates that will update these phones to the newest software available. The fact that Xiaomi has issued an update to the Redmi Note 3 that was launched in India nearly three years ago – in March 2016 has come as a surprise to many.
As for the Mi A1, When Xiaomi launched that phone here in India back in September 2017, it had a lot of firsts to its credit. It was the first handset from Xiaomi to have launched in India with stock Android and was also a part of Google’s Android One initiative. It was also the first budget handset from Xiaomi to sport a dual-camera setup at the rear.
However, even after being an Android One device, updates for the handset did not come as quickly for the Mi A1 as most owners expected. Nevertheless, the newest update for the Mi A1 is here and will officially graduate the phone from Android 8.1 Oreo to Android 9 Pie. As for the Redmi Note 3, the handset remains at Android 6.0 Marshmallow and will only see an update to MIUI 10.

Xiaomi Mi A1 Android Pie Update details
As mentioned earlier in this article, the newest software update for the Mi A1 graduates the Android One phone from Android 8.1 to Android 9. The changelog for the newest update adds several new features to the handset including support for FM Radio and adding features like adaptive brightness and adaptive battery management. Xiaomi has also made tweaks to the navigation menu for the Mi A1 and seems to have added better navigation options. The phone now also recommends apps based on your usage patterns. This update for the Mi A1 is a large 1GB download and should be ideally completed over a Wi-Fi connection. According to a thread on the MIUI forum, the newest update also adds support for dual VoLTE usage for Indian users. This, however, is yet to be officially confirmed by Xiaomi. Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Software Update Details
Several Redmi Note 3 users in India have confirmed that they have received an OTA update notification in their old phones. This update, according to them, will graduate the handset to the MIUI 10 which is currently the newest version of Xiaomi’s custom UI. As usual, this is an OTA update that will be based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Post the update, your Redmi Note 3 will graduate to MIUI 10.1.1.0.MHOMIFI. The update is 261MB in size and also includes the July 2018 security patch from Android.
The update to MIUI 10 will be a significant one for the Redmi Note 3 and adds support for features like Split Screen apps, a completely new notification panel, support for full-screen gestures, better multi-tasking management and new volume sliders. There are also several bug fixes for the handset as well.
This update to MIUI 10 for the Redmi Note 3 will be the last update for the device to be officially released for the device.
