OPPO has finally successfully made the world’s first ever 5G mobile phone-based WeChat video call. OPPO is a company which has been at the helm of 5G development since the days of the technology’s conception. The company is constantly striving to bring this new technology to its customers across the globe in early 2019.

The news of this milestone achievement surfaced on Weibo, the Chinese social networking website. The Vice President of OPPO, Shen Yiren, unable to control her happiness, revealed the information through a post on Weibo, exclaiming how the company had conquered one of its most difficult challenges. The fact that OPPO has successfully conducted a 5G video call isn’t quite surprising. In fact, the company began its preparation for 5G testing ever since 2015. Earlier this year, the company had made a breath-taking announcement of how it had successfully managed to use 3D structured optical technology for its first 5G video call. It seems like the company has progressed since then in leaps and bounds. Just a few months back, OPPO announced its 5G testing on a modified version of its OPPO R15 smartphone with the Snapdragon X50. The test was conducted on 3GPP Release 15 NSA standard with the 10 MHz bandwidth of 4G LTE Band 5 and 20 MHz bandwidth of 5G NR n78 band.

OPPO Invested 10 Billion Yuan in G5 Research And Development

Just a day ago, OPPO made a pretty ground-breaking announcement. The company has made a massive 10 billion Yuan investment into research and development in the field of 5G, Artificial Intelligence, and the Internet of Things. This decision by OPPO bears testimony to the fact that the company is looking to capitalize on the 5G technology and develop on it as fast as possible.

Oppo Australia MD Michael Tran made the intentions of the company extremely clear when he said that: “5G is a significant network upgrade… in addition to striving to become the first manufacturer to launch 5G smartphones, Oppo’s exploration of application opportunities in the 5G era will ultimately determine the value of 5G… Oppo will fully integrate 5G with applications and user insights, and continuously innovate.”

Perhaps, the company has recognized what the future of 5G technology can be like and is quickly capitalizing on the technology when it’s still in its infancy. Developing the upcoming technology will also give the company the edge when manufacturing 5G enabled smartphones. Having a clear picture of its development and potential will allow OPPO to manufacture smartphones which best utilize the new network.

OPPO aren’t the only ones attempting to dive into the 5G space. Telecommunication companies like Reliance Jio are attempting to do the same. Given its success in the past, there’s no doubt that Reliance Jio could be one of the companies to spearhead the development of the 5G network in India. Along with Reliance Jio are Airtel and Vodafone Idea who have made clear their 5G roadmap in India.
