The so-called Snapdragon 8150 has surfaced online even before its official launch. Much about the Snapdragon 8150 is already known. Courtesy of a live stream by Qualcomm, announcing details of its 5G event next week, we now know that the Snapdragon 8150 is no more than just an internal name.
The truth has been uncovered and brought to the fore. The Snapdragon 8150 as we know it, is actually not the 8150. This is merely an internal name and not the name of the retail chip. The upcoming Qualcomm chipset will be officially launched during a three-day 5G extravaganza held between December 4th and December 6th.
The Snapdragon 8150 Is Not The Name Of The Chipset
The confusion regarding the name of the chipset arose when the German website WinFuture.de released details regarding the chipset in October. Since then, most publications have mistakenly covered leaks and rumours of the chipset by referring to it as the Snapdragon 8150. Like it or hate it, but this isn’t the marketing name of the chipset and it’s certainly going to be different from the Snapdragon 8150 name given to it. In all likelihood, it will be called the Snapdragon 855.
This chipset is the successor to the Snapdragon 845 SoC which is found on many 2019 flagship devices including the Samsung Galaxy Note 9. Till date, the Snapdragon 845 chipset has been the most powerful and dominant of all Snapdragon SoCs. While the company may follow the naming strategy and name its upcoming chipset as the Snapdragon 855, it might also adopt an entirely different name, signifying a totally different lineup. If Qualcomm does this, it definitely won’t be the first time as the company has jumped from the S4 SoC to a new naming scheme starting with the 200 series.
A new naming scheme doesn’t sound all that bad since the Snapdragon 8150 is the very first chip to have a 5G modem. Well, in all honesty, at the end of the day, the name of the chip is just a name. The specifications of the chip are going to remain the same and that’s what is most important.
What To Expect From The Snapdragon 8150 Chipset?
The internally named Snapdragon 8150 is rumoured to feature a triple CPU cluster design. The chip is also allegedly based on the 7nm manufacturing process. The triple CPU cluster design has also been used by Huawei for its Kirin 980 chipset. A rumour suggests that the chipset will feature a Kryo Gold Prime core with 512KB L2 cache running at a maximum frequency of 2.842GHz. Along with this, the SoC sports three Kryo Gold cores operating at a speed of 2.419GHz and four low-power quad-core Kryo Silver running at a frequency of 1.786GHz.
The high-performing cores are likely to be ARM Cortex-A76 ones while the low-performing cores being based on Cortex-A55 cores. The Snapdragon 8150 could very well shake up the competition and take the top spot. A leaked Geekbench score reveals that the chipset is quite strong but lags behind the Apple A12 Bionic chip. One of the main highlights of the Snapdragon 8150 chip is the 5G modem, allowing for smartphones to support 5G networks. 5G technology is likely to come more of a standard in 2019. 2019 is likely to see a large number of smartphones supporting 5G networks with one of the first devices being the Moto Z4.
