While Reliance Jio is pushing the Indian telecom regulatory authority for an early allocation of the 5G spectrum, it also seems to be prepared to capture a bigger market share based on its innovations in other technologies. Briefly put, 5G will not be the only advantage for Jio, as it might just take the lead in rolling out Voice Over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) as well.
Voice Over WiFi is not very different from Voice over LTE (VoLTE), which was rolled out by Jio before other telecom giants followed suit. In a media interview, a top executive at Jio event has hinted that the company will bring something new every few months in 2019, so it is certain to be an exciting year ahead.
Reliance Jio Seen Testing VoWiFi
The telecom-focused publication Telecom Talk reported that one of its readers spotted an iPhone 7 running Jio’s Voice over WiFi service. The report carried a screenshot, which makes it rather straight-forward that the Mukesh-Ambani led telecom behemoth is now testing its VoWiFi service. This would mean that the year 2019 will have Reliance Jio capturing more market share which is presently held by Vodafone Idea, Bharti Airtel and BSNL.
The state-owned company is nowhere in the picture when it comes to VoWiFi, but both Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel are reportedly in advanced stages of testing the service. Given that the Centre plans to set up 100,000 free Wi-Fi hotspots in the country in the year 2019, Jio will naturally reap the first mover advantage.
What is VoWiFi and How Will it Work on Reliance Jio?
Voice over Wi-Fi will work in tandem with Voice over LTE, and you will still need a SIM card to use this service. The difference is that your 4G LTE SIM card is only useful when there is sufficient operator network available, but Voice over Wi-Fi will work even where the network is weak or absent. This will apply to remote places such as small towns and villages, but also to uncountable commercial and residential premises in large metro cities where networks struggle to reach because of their impregnable walls. Most, if not all of us, face issues with our networks when indoors, either at home or at the office or while at a friend’s place, but VoWiFi will put an end to these woes.
As far as Jio is concerned, the plan is to begin VoWiFi service for Jio-to-Jio calling in the initial phase and then proceed to make it a full-fledged service.
No Slowing Down in 2019 For Jio
Speaking to the Economic Times about Jio’s business plans for 2019, Jio President (Devices) Sunil Dutt said there is no slowing down. Although, he stated that Jio’s purpose was not to capture more market share but to provide quality and affordable network services, he also made it clear that Jio will come up with something new every few months in 2019.
Revolution is in the DNA of Jio, he said and skirted a question on a possible Jio Phone 3 coming out in 2019, maintaining that it was still a matter of speculation. Jio expects a high rate of digital adoption in 2019, he said, expressing optimism about providing better options to millions of feature phone users in India. He confirmed that Jio was working with partners to develop large screen smartphones that are 4G compatible and yet highly affordable, so that feature phone users can move up at only a small cost.
