Xiaomi Mi A3, Mi A3 Lite Could Equip Snapdragon 700-series Processors: Report

A tweet by Manu Kumar Jain, Xiaomi’s Global VP last week confirmed that a new smartphone from the brand would feature a Snapdragon 7xx series processor, leading everyone to believe that he was referring to the upcoming Mi A3. Now, the folks over at XDA-Developers seem to have uncovered evidence supporting this assumption. Early information obtained from some source code reveals that smartphones codenamed Bamboo Sprout and Cosmos Sprout will run Snapdragon 7xx series chipsets. The ‘sprout’ suffix is known to indicate Android One smartphones, and as such, it is believed that the two phones in question are the Mi A3 and Mi A3 Lite.

In total, three smartphones from Xiaomi are said to come with Snapdragon 7xx series chipsets – ‘bamboo_sprout’, ‘cosmos_sprout’, and ‘pyxis’. It hasn’t been discovered which exact chipsets will be used on these phones. Considering the Snapdragon 730 and Snapdragon 730G are the most recent SoCs to be unveiled by Qualcomm as part of this series, at least the Mi A3 should get one of these chipsets running under the hood. The Snapdragon 730 is built on an 8nm process and offer eight CPU cores where two performance cores are clocked at 2.2GHz, and six efficiency cores are clocked at 1.8GHz. We also have the Snapdragon 712 and Snapdragon 710 chipsets, one of which we might see on the more affordable Mi A3 Lite.

It hasn’t yet been discovered which smartphone from Xiaomi carries the ‘pyxis’ designation. Other than the fact that it will also run on a Snapdragon 7xx-series SoC, there isn’t much else known about this mystery handset.

Mi A3, Mi A3 Lite To Sport In-Display Fingerprint Scanners

In a previous report also from XDA, it was discovered that ‘bamboo_sprout’, ‘cosmos_sprout’, and ‘pyxis’ were being tested for “fod”. This term is known to denote fingerprint on display, indicating that the phones could feature in-screen fingerprint tech. If this turns out to be true, we won’t be too surprised as the feature is being found on more affordable smartphone offerings these days. The Mi A3 could potentially be the first phone in this series to feature not only an in-screen fingerprint sensor but also an OLED screen.

It is also being said that the phone might get 32MP front-facing cameras that will likely make use of 4-in-1 pixel binning for better low light outputs.
