Govt. Bars Amazon, Flipkart and Online Stores From Selling Non Essential Goods During Lockdown

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has barred the sales and delivery of non-essential goods for the entire duration of the lockdown period. In a fresh order issued a few minutes ago, the central government reversed its original stance that allowed e-commerce platforms to resume the sale and delivery of non-essential items across the country. This move comes hours after e-commerce giants Flipkart, Amazon, and Mi.com announced that they were resuming the sales of smartphones and mobile phone accessories on their platforms. In fact, Xiaomi India CEO Manu Kumar Jain had already announced that his company was resuming sales on Mi.com starting tomorrow — only to reverse the decision less than an hour later.

Flipkart had already announced its decision to resume sales, as reported by us yesterday. As of writing this article, Amazon had also resumed taking orders for smartphones and devices like the Samsung Galaxy M31Redmi 8A Dual, and the Realme 5 Pro were already on sale. These companies are yet to officially issue a statement in reaction to the MHA’s latest directive.

We have embedded the fresh order from the MHA in the tweet below.

After this fresh order was issued, several people have taken to social media demanding that items like mobile phones, printer accessories, among others, be included in the list of essential items.

The MHA had in its earlier order dated April 14 included e-commerce companies in the list of services that would be allowed to operate starting April 20. We have added a screenshot of that order below.

With the number of COVID-19 cases continuing to rise across the country, the government seems to have arrived at a decision to reverse its original stance. The new directive essentially bars the sales and delivery of non-essential items until the end of the lockdown period, which as of now, is May 3. Any decision to extend the lockdown period beyond May 3 is yet to be taken and will be solely based on the number of cases detected by then and the extent of the spread of the virus.
