Days after the Ministry of Home Affairs issued revised guidelines for services that shall be allowed during the extended lockdown period, major smartphone brands have reportedly started discussions to resume their sales via online retailers. According to a report by ET Telecom, major smartphone brands like Xiaomi, OPPO, Realme, and Vivo have are in talks with Amazon and Flipkart so that they can resume sales starting April 20.
The ET Telecom report quotes Realme India CEO Madhav Sheth, who has confirmed that they intend to start selling their smartphones and audio accessories via Flipkart and their own e-store very soon. He did, however, add that any final decision shall be made once they receive clarity from state governments.
Similar sentiments were echoed by spokespersons from Xiaomi, OPPO, and Vivo spokespersons who revealed they are still on discussions with their retail partners and evaluating the current situation before any final decision is taken in this regard.
“We welcome the new guidelines by the Ministry of Home Affairs around the sale of electronic devices on e-commerce platforms post 20th April. We are assessing the current situation along with our partners and will share an update once we have clarity,” an Oppo India spokesperson was quoted saying.
Manufacturers have also indicated the possibility of resumption of sales with Xiaomi announcing the launch of its vacuum cleaner in the country earlier today. Realme India also recently announced its plan to announce its new Narzo 10 series devices in the country on April 21.
With brock and mortar stores likely to remain shut for the rest of the lockdown period, e-commerce platforms definitely stand to benefit from this move. Analysts also expect a surge in demand for low-cost phones at least during the initial days of resumption of sales as it would help people who were left with damaged, unusable phones to buy new devices.
