Twitter to Become More Inclusive in Verifying Profiles, and Label Bots for What They Are in 2021

Twitter has revamped its verification policies once again and the new policies will be implemented from January 20, 2021. The company has announced via an official blog post. Twitter also mentioned that it will autocratically remove all the verified badge from incomplete and inactive accounts. Last month, the social media platform unveiled its idea of relaunching the verification programme in the upcoming year 2021. The company also sought feedback from Twitter users about revamping the policies. Back in 2017, the social media platform stopped taking public submissions for verified accounts and now it’s finally coming back.

Twitter to Bring Back Public Verification Programme

According to the policies shared by Twitter, there are some key changes which are going to be implemented during the revamp. Just in case you don’t know Twitter verified account means your account will have a unique blue tick badge next to the username which makes your profile easier to identify. The company claims that the two weeks -public feedback gathered more than 22,000 responses that help the platform to mould their new policies.

“Your account must be active with a record of adherence to the Twitter Rules. This means:

  • Complete: You must have a profile name, and a profile image;
  • Active use: You must have logged into the account in the last six months;
  • Security: The account must have a confirmed email address or phone number; and
  • Twitter Rules: The account must not have had a 12-hour or 7-day lockout for violating the Twitter Rules in the past six months (excluding successful appeals),” reads the official blog post.

The company also cleared that the accounts which are indulged in Parody, newsfeed, commentary, and fan accounts are not eligible for the blue badge. Accounts engaged in severe violations of our Platform manipulation and spam policy, such as the buying and selling of followers and engagement are also ineligible for the verification process.

Meanwhile, the company is also planning to create a new type of accounts for bots in 2021, which will reorganized as automated. According to the company bot accounts “can bring a lot of value to the service,” but acknowledged that “it can be confusing to people if it’s not clear that these accounts are automated.” The company also mentioned that the new “memoralised account” type will be built in 2021 for the people who have died.
