Xiaomi Ships 5.5 Million Smartphones in October, Beats Samsung to Lead the Indian Market: IDC India

The Indian smartphone market has registered a massive year-over-year (YoY) growth of 42 per cent in October. As per the latest data released by International Data Corporation (IDC), India saw a shipment of 21 million smartphones, which is driven by multiple online sale festivals. Once again, Xiaomi gained the top spot as it shipping the most smartphones in the country followed by Samsung, Vivo, Realme, OPPO, and more. Here’s what you need to know about the latest report from IDC on the Indian smartphone market shipment in October 2020.

Xiaomi tops the Indian smartphone market, beats Samsung

IDC released its Indian Monthly Smartphone Tracker report that shows Xiaomi has shipped 5.5 million units in October this year. The company has grabbed 24.8 per cent of market share, placing it at the top. During the same time last year, Xiaomi shipped 3.9 million units and the brand has seen a 38.1 per cent year-on-year growth in October.

Samsung is in the second sport despite seeing year-on-year growth of 42.2 per cent in October. The company shipped 4.5 million units in India in the month of October accounting for a market share of 20.6 per cent. Interestingly, the brand shipped 3.2 million units in October last year.

Vivo grabbed the third position with 3.9 million units shipped in October 2020. The company has managed to get 17.8 per cent of market share in the country. With this, the brand has seen a YoY growth of 37.3 per cent. Realme is in the fourth position with year-over-year growth of 48.2 per cent. The brand shipped 3.0 million units in October this year as compared to 2.0 million units the previous year. Lastly, OPPO shipped 2.7 million units with a YoY growth rate of 40.2 per cent.

Indian smartphone market growth

As per the latest data by IDC, the Indian smartphone market grew by 42 per cent year-on-year in October. IDC says that the growth was due to the increase in online sales and pent up demand from the third quarter of this year. The report further adds that a number of units shipped in India are the highest ever for October and second-highest for a single month after 23 million units were shipped in September this year.

The report adds that online channel contributed to the 51 per cent share, while the offline channels also registered a healthy 33 per cent YoY growth. The low-midrange segment (US$100-200) grew by 60% YoY, as its share increased to 58% of the total market. Xiaomi, Vivo, and Samsung led with the Redmi 9, Note 9, and Vivo Y20 as the top models. The premium segment (US$500-700) witnessed multifold growth with high shipments of the iPhone XR, 11 and OnePlus 8 driven by affordability schemes/offers.
