Samsung is seemingly working on a smartphone front camera setup, which will use a triple selfie camera configuration. Tipster Mukul Sharma, who goes by Stuff Listings on Twitter, shared rendered sketches of what appears to be a smartphone schematic on the platform. However, he did not elaborate on whether these schematics were general approaches to showing a triple selfie camera configuration on a smartphone, or whether Samsung plans to use this in a commercially available smartphone, some time soon. The schematics may also belong to a patent filing for such a smartphone camera setup, and the sketches explore the setup in two different ways in these schematics.
According to the sketches, the triple selfie camera configuration appears to use three individual drill holes on the display. Samsung has so far not used individual camera slots on the front of a smartphone to setup the cameras, but if this holds true, then it will be a first for the smartphone manufacturer. However, that is not all — the triple selfie camera setup explores two different positions on the display. This suggests that the Samsung patent or schematic may explore placing the camera to either the top left or the top right, and exactly how it translates in commercial form remains to be seen.

However, it is important to note that the front camera configurations used by companies so far have largely placed the front cameras to the top left of the phone — a placement that has typically seemed ergonomic and natural. It is also as yet unknown as to how might Samsung use such a triple selfie camera configuration to add actual value to the photography experience. General speculations suggest that Samsung may use a high resolution main sensor for the primary selfie camera, and accompany it with one ultra-wide angle selfie camera, and use the third module either for a black and white sensor, or a depth sensing unit that will help the Samsung camera produce better portrait shots.
Given the general improvement in camera algorithms, many have started wondering if such triple and quad camera configurations are even necessary in today’s smartphones, barring the offering of optical zoom on phone cameras. On this note, it will be interesting to see if Samsung even brings such a triple selfie camera configuration to the commercial form, and eat up more screen space in favour of cameras. If it does, it may look at exploring new features that will enhance the overall front camera experience, from what it already is today.
