Google announced the latest Android update for its Pixel devices and other some other Android devices earlier this month. A few days after the update, the reports of hotspot-related issues have started to surface. Users are complaining that they have been facing the problems tethering the devices after they have updated to the latest Android version.

Google Pixel 2: What is the Issue?
Some users are complaining that their phone’s hotspot cannot be detected on other devices like Play Station or a desktop. Some other have reported that the hotspot connection keeps dropping. Users have also complained that they can’t access the internet if they are able to connect to the hotspot. Take a look at some of the comments from the users having trouble on their devices.
“Anyone have a fix for this. Hotspot isn’t physically disconnecting according to the icon but in settings when viewing what’s connected it’s going back and forth from 1 device connected to 0 devices connected like it keeps connecting and disconnecting over and over. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Never had a problem with the Hotspot until updating to 9 last night and I use it daily.”
One other user reported, “My hotspot keeps disconnecting since the update. I even shut off auto turn off feature. Tried to reboot also and still does the same. Anyone else having this problem?”
Most of the complaints are related to the Google Pixel 2. However, there was one comment that revealed the problem is not limited to Pixel 2, the devices from the previous generation are also getting affected.
“Anyone else having trouble with their hotspot staying connected? It’s always randomly turned itself off, but now it seems to every 20 mins or less. Then it takes a while for me to be able to turn it back on. It was never this bad until I just updated to Android Pie. Also, have a Pixel 1 XL, if that matters”.
Issues with PS4/PS4 Pro Users
Apparently, the problem is not limited to a hotspot connection among the smartphones. There have been complaints from the users trying to set up a hotspot connection with their PS4 and PS4 Pro. Take a look at the following comment from a PS4 owner.
“So I work away a fair amount and have always used my phone on 4g internet as a hotspot to connect my PS4. My phone upgraded to Android 9 last week and when I’ve tried to connect to the hotspot now, it won’t work. It connects to the hotspot and gets an IP address but won’t connect to the internet. PS4 will connect to my work iPhone hotspot and the internet. Other devices will connect to my phone’s hotspot and then the internet. It seems the only combination that doesn’t work is the PS4 and the hotspot. I’ve tried doing the 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 thing to no avail. Android 9.0 only came out the week before last but that’s all that’s changed since the hotspot last worked. SSID is the same, password the same, phone the same apart from the software.”
One more user reported, “I am having the same issue. Xbox, PC, PS3 all work correctly, but PS4s (I have tried two) does not work after upgrading to Android 9.0 on Pixel 2 XL, Verizon GUDP.”

Users have Faced Similar Problems in the Past
The problem that has just come to light is not new. There are reports of users facing similar situations in the past regarding Android P developer beta. The Google’s issue tracking website had the issue acknowledges and the current tethering/hotspot issue is also caught up in multiple threads on the website. There is no official word from Google on the matter yet. The tech giant is expected to address the issue soon.
