Huawei Mate 20 Tipped to Sport Kirin 980 SoC With Wireless Charging, Pro Variant to Have In-display Scanner

Huawei smartphones, irrespective of how much they have improved in several years, still do not have support for wireless charging. However, with the Mate 20 and the Mate 20 Pro, all that might change. The latest information surrounding the Mate 20 reveals that the smartphone will come with wireless charging support and other information that you’d love to read about.

Huawei Kirin 980, Mate 20: Launch Details

The launch date of the Kirin 980 is set for the 31st of August, where Huawei will be making an appearance at the IFA 2018 trade show held in Berlin. Huawei has always managed to find a presence here and we will know soon enough what kind of improvements are present in the latest chipset manufactured on TSMC’s 7nm FinFET architecture. However, the Mate 20 might not be launched on the aforementioned date and might see an unveiling taking place during the month of October.

Huawei Kirin 980: Expected Specifications, Features

Kirin 980 is going to be made using TSMC’s 7nm FinFET technology and will result in at least 20% better performance and up to 40% better energy efficiency. This will result in improved battery life and a better performance-per-watt metric.

A previous specifications leak has stated that the CPU running in the Kirin 980 will offer a maximum clock speed of 2.8GHz for the four powerful Cortex-A77 cores. Unfortunately, the speed of the more efficient Cortex-A55 cores have not specified but we can expect it to come with a 1.8GHz frequency considering its predecessor was offering the same. Huawei is also reportedly making the use of its own GPU that is said to be 1.5 times faster than the Adreno 630 GPU, a graphics processor currently present in the Snapdragon 845.

Kirin 980 will reportedly be using the new Cambrian NPU that is developed by Cambricon Technologies. The AI-inspired NPU by Cambricon is expected to ship in dual, quad and octa-core variants, depending on the level of AI processing required.

However, it does not appear that the Kirin 980 will provide support for 5G connectivity when it is officially launched. Still, the 31st of August is not that far off and we’ll know for sure what the company has in store for the smartphone industry when the Kirin 980’s performance and efficiency numbers are made public.

Huawei Mate 20: Expected Specifications, Features

The first smartphones to feature the Kirin 980 will be the Mate 20 and the Mate 20 Pro. The Mate 20 Pro is expected to feature a massive 6.9-inch OLED screen that will be manufactured by Samsung, but the Mate 20 is expected to get a 6.3-inch AMOLED panel. It is not known if there is going to be a notch present or not but if the P20 Pro (review) can have one, what is stopping Huawei from using it on the upcoming flagship?

The battery belonging to the Mate 20 will be a 4200mAh capacity. The P20 Pro features a 4000mAh unit, so this is going to be a small improvement, with the rest of the benefits coming from the 7nm FinFET chipset immediately. A flagship phone like this is also going to support fast charging, but more importantly, the Mate 20 could be the first device from Huawei to get Qi wireless charging support.

This means the backside of the Mate 20 will be made entirely of glass, and it may be scratch-resistant, but certainly not drop-resistant. The Kirin 980 is going to be paired with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage, and it is expected that there are going to be four different Mate 20 models getting released. They come with the model numbers HMA-AL00, HMA-L09, HMA-L29, HMA-TL00, indicating that the Mate 20 could be launched in several different RAM and internal storage versions. The software side of things will see the smartphone running Android P, with the latest EMUI 9.0 skin running on top.

Both the Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro might feature better camera hardware, which includes a better camera sensor, ISP, DSP and more, but the ‘Pro’ version will feature an in-display fingerprint reader. Any other information that we might have missed will be available before or during the 31st of August.
