While the Supreme Court made a landmark judgment yesterday, on September 26 where it upheld the constitutional validity of the Aadhaar card, telecom majors Vodafone and Airtel, apart from digital payments company, Paytm were on the receiving end of some crude humour from users on the internet, as they were mercilessly getting trolled.
Vodafone, Paytm and Airtel get trolled:
The Aadhar judgment was a significant one delivered by the apex court, yesterday, where it virtually legalised the existence of Aadhaar and its related data. This was, however, followed by several riders from the Supreme Court. One such specific provision in section 57 of the Aadhaar Act 2016, which allowed corporate bodies, entities, state and private companies to insist on providing the Aadhaar card for personal verification and identification.
So this means that the companies such as banks, telecom operators and other utility service providers cannot demand users to submit their Aadhaar Cards as a document of proof in exchange for their services.

The Aadhar And KYC Connection:
Until now, most companies like Paytm, Mobikwik, Jio, Airtel and Vodafone have largely been relying on the Aadhaar data for their e-verification process and Know Your Customer (KYC) process as well. Now that the Supreme Court has ordered the scrapping of this provision, these firms can no longer rely on Aadhaar data or insist on it for verifying and signing up a customer.
It is needless to say that the e-verification process through Aadhaar data was largely convenient for telecom companies and online payments systems. Apart from this, the cost involved in the verification process was extremely low, as Aadhaar related data is gathered and stored by the Government.
RBI Guidelines:
While the likes of Airtel, Vodafone and Paytm are now turning to their respective regulators in the form of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and Reserve Bank of India (RBI) respectively for instructions or guidelines as to how to proceed further and they look at the potential hike in costs in the e-verification process, several users online have been rubbing salt to the wounds by trolling these firms mercilessly online.
Users took to social media platforms like Twitter to post messages tagging the likes of Vodafone, Airtel and Paytm and asking them to use alternate methods of e-verification. Some of the users even sarcastically suggested that they would like to delist their Aadhaar number that has been linked to their existing accounts.
This outrage from commentators is unsurprising owing to the refusal of several utilities like Banks, e-wallets and mobile phone operators refusing to provide services or verify users without them having to submit Aadhar data. Earlier the Government had set a deadline of December 31, 2017 to link all essential accounts with Aadhaar Card and this was further extended to March 31, 2018.
However, even beyond this deadline, several of these companies have been insisting that users submit their Aadhaar data for verification or face suspension of services. Banks had even posted the messages in their ATMs and sent constant reminders in the form of texts and calls to users to link their data.

In some instances, Paytm allowed users to verify their account using their PAN card, but invariably this wouldn’t be approved by the verifying agents. The option was therefore, largely redundant. Paytm came up with the excuse that their verifying agents didn’t have the resources or the means to verify accounts with any other data other than Aadhaar related data.
Now since the Supreme court has relaxed the rules with the verdict, it will be interesting to see how these companies react and look for alternate ways to do their verification process.
