Huawei P20 Pro, Honor Play, Honor 10 Receive EMUI 9 Update Based on Android 9 Beta 2 OS

What turns out to be a new development concerning Huawei smartphones, the flagship Huawei P20 Pro has finally got a new update to EMUI 9 based on Android 9 Pie Beta testing. The same update extends to other high-end smartphones by Huawei and its sub-brand Honor, such as the Honor 10 and the Honor Play.

The software update brings in several changes, and we had yesterday, September 20 reported how the Huawei Mate 10 Lite was spotted on Geekbench with Android 9 Pie, suggesting an earlier-than-expected roll out. All this points to a new EMUI skin by Huawei for its compatible devices which will be based on the Android 9 Pie, and which could be rolled out as early as next month, in October.

Huawei P20 Pro, Honor Play, Honor 10: OS Update

Huawei has started rolling out the EMUI 9 version 9.0.0.106 as an update to its previous EMUI 9 version 9.0.0.46 Beta ROM, which is for China users of Huawei P20 Pro, Honor Play, Huawei Mate 10 and Honor 10 smartphones interested in the Android 9 Pie Beta programme. If you don’t have the Huawei Beta app, you can download it from this link. Once installed, you can log in and go to Personal > Join Project > EMUI 9. The programme is available for users in China and Europe only, and the phones compatible are: Huawei Mate 10, Huawei Mate 10 Pro, Huawei P20, Huawei P20 Pro, Honor 10, Honor View 10, and Honor Play.

The changelog mentions that the new update fixes the issue where the King of Glory game was closing in some situations. Further, it improves system compatibility with some apps and networks. This is not an entirely new ROM, so it does not wipe away your data, but you are better off saving back up. Also, you cannot download the EMUI 9 Beta manually, since it is an OTA ROM for registered Beta testing users in limited numbers only.

In India, the Honor Play recently received an EMUI 8.2 Stable update with full-screen gesture navigation features.

The Huawei P20 Pro, Honor Play and the Honor 10 are all powered by the same Huawei flagship chipset called Hisilicon Kirin 970, clocked at 2.4GHz and paired typically to a 6GB RAM, although there are other RAM options depending on the market. They ship with an EMUI 8 skin based on Android Oreo and are now under Android 9 Pie Beta testing phase, so you can expect a stable version of the EMUI 9 based on Android 9 Pie for these handsets around the world quite soon.

The Huawei P20 Pro gets a 6.1-inch Super AMOLED display with a small screen notch, while the Honor Play has a 6.3-inch IPS LCD display and the Honor 10 has a 5.84-inch IPS LCD display, both of which comes with a notch. The Honor 10 and the Huawei P20 Pro come with a glass back, only the P20 Pro has a triple rear camera, which is essentially its USP. The rear camera on this handset features a 40MP+20MP+8MP setup, with optical image stabilisation, 3x optical zoom, and super slow-motion HD video recording. The front camera is 24MP, which is also the case with the Honor 10, but the latter has a 16MP+24MP rear dual camera. The Honor Play has a 16MP+2MP rear dual camera and a 16MP front camera.

Of these three, only the Huawei P20 Pro does not get a 3.5mm audio output jack, while all three of them get Type-C reversible USB connectors and rear-mounted fingerprint sensors. All three of these handsets also get fast charging, with the Huawei P20 Pro sporting the largest battery (4000mAh), followed by the Honor Play (3750mAh) and the Honor 10 (3400mAh).

If you want a more affordable variant of one of these phones, you can go for the 4GB RAM variant of the Honor Play for Rs 19,999.
