Motorola recently launched quite a few devices in India. The most notable among the Moto Android smartphones is the Moto G6 Plus. The high-end variant within the latest Motorola G6 Series is quite a capable smartphone. It firmly sits in the mid-range Android smartphone segment.
On the other hand, HMD Global is about to launch its latest smartphone, the Nokia 7.1 Plus. After launching the Nokia 5.1, 6.1, and their respective ‘Plus’ variants, the Nokia 7.1 Plus appears to be a rather premium offering. However, previous reports indicate the company may price the Android One smartphone within the same range as that of the Moto G6 Plus.
Incidentally, both the Moto G6 Plus and the Nokia 7.1 Plus have very similar specifications. With near identical screen and battery sizes, and similar cameras, it is a bit difficult to easily compare the Android smartphones. Let’s look at five key aspects and reasons that may allow buyers to skip the latest Motorola smartphone, and wait for the Nokia 7.1 Plus instead. It is important to note that the Nokia 7.1 Plus hasn’t officially launched or announced in India yet. Hence some of the specifications, features as well as price could alter.
Moto G6 Plus vs Nokia 7.1 Plus: Price
The Motorola G6 Plus is only available in a single variant. The Moto G6 Plus with 6GB of RAM and 64GB internal memory carries a list price of 22,499 in India.
The Nokia 7.1 Plus is yet to officially launch in India. We expect the Android One smartphone may cost around Rs. 25,000. HMD Global has withheld critical details about price and availability. The company took three months to bring the Nokia 6.1 Plus to India after its global announcement. Since the Nokia handset is yet to launch even in international markets, there’s still some time for the device to arrive in India.
Moto G6 Plus vs Nokia 7.1 Plus: Design, Display
The Moto G6 Plus features a 5.9-inch Max Vision IPS LCD Full HD+ display with 1080 x 2160 resolution, and 18:9 aspect ratio. A Corning Gorilla Glass 3 layer protects the display. Incidentally, Motorola still places a fingerprint scanner on the front of the handset, which significantly increases the chin on the bottom.
Several renders of the alleged Nokia 7.1 Plus surfaced recently. The renders indicate the smartphone will have 6.1-inch IPS LCD Full HD+ display with 1080 x 2280 resolution and a 19:9 aspect ratio. Interestingly, the Nokia handset reportedly sports a notched display. This boosts the screen to body ratio, as against the Moto G6 Plus that has a 74.4 percent screen-to-body ratio.
Moto G6 Plus vs Nokia 7.1 Plus: RAM, Internal Memory
The Moto G6 Plus gets 6GB of RAM and 64GB of internal memory. Motorola doesn’t offer any other variant with lower or higher RAM and internal memory. However, the company has built in a dedicated micro-SD card slot that allows memory expansion by up to 256GB.
The Nokia 7.1 Plus is expected to pack 6G of RAM and 128GB of internal memory. Moreover, previous reports indicate HMD Global may offer a lower variant with 4GB RAM and 64GB internal memory. The price of this variant will certainly be lower than the 6GB/128GB model. A hybrid dual SIM Card slot allows insertion of a micro-SD card, expanding the storage by up to 400GB.
Moto G6 Plus vs Nokia 7.1 Plus: Processor, GPU
This is the main area in which the Nokia 7.1 Plus truly outshines the Moto G6 Plus. Launched earlier this month in India, the Moto G6 Plus has Qualcomm SDM630 Snapdragon 630 octa-core processor clocked at 2.2GHz. The processor works with Adreno 508 GPU.
While the SoC within the Motorola smartphone is a capable mid-range chipset, Nokia 7.1 Plus is expected to pack Qualcomm SDM710 Snapdragon 710 octa-core processor. The processors will work with Adreno 616 GPU. Although the chipset features identical clock speed to Snapdragon 630, it is the next generation of capable mid-range SoC that offers much better battery endurance even with extended usage. The GPU too, offers better, faster, and more fluid display.
Moto G6 Plus vs Nokia 7.1 Plus: Battery, OS
Speaking of the battery, the Moto G6 Plus and the Nokia 7.1 Plus pack near identical batteries. The Moto G6 Plus has a non-removable 3,200 mAh battery. Motorola offers a TurboPower charger in the box with the rated output of 15watts, which significantly speeds up charging. The Moto G6 Plus runs Android 8.1 Oreo. Moreover, the company is promising a near-pure Android experience.
The Nokia 7.1 Plus packs a slightly larger, but still non-removable 3,300mAh battery. The handset gets Quick Charge 3.0 Fast Charging support. There’s no mention of a power charger, but HMD Global should optimize the available charger to offer faster charging times without heating the smartphone. The Nokia 7.1 Plus is an Android One smartphone. Given the fact it is still to launch, the smartphone may run Android 9 Pie out of the box. Moreover, the Android One handset will receive security and other updates for a longer duration.
Moto G6 Plus vs Nokia 7.1 Plus: Camera
The Motorola Moto G6 Plus packs a dual 12MP + 5MP camera on back. It offers 4K video recording support at 30FPS. The smartphone gets a 8MP front camera. Surprisingly, as per previous reports, only the Indian variant of the Moto G6 Plus gets a large 16MP front camera. The selfie camera comes with a group selfie mode, and has an LED flash.
Nokia smartphones have typically sported powerful cameras, and the Nokia 7.1 Plus is certainly no exception. The smartphone packs a dual camera setup on the back. We believe the camera unit will consist of 12MP + 5MP sensors. However, these are no ordinary camera sensors. The Nokia 7.1 Plus will feature Carl Zeiss optics. The Zeiss branding is quite visible in the renders, and it clearly indicates the smartphone will have superior optics. Moreover, the Nokia 7.1 Plus may pack a similarly large 16MP selfie camera on the front.
Moto G6 Plus vs Nokia 7.1 Plus: Verdict
The Moto G6 Plus is certainly a capable mid-range Android smartphone with many good specifications. However, the Nokia 7.1 Plus manages to match nearly every aspect of the Motorola smartphone.
Moreover, it races ahead with a next-gen processor and two different memory variants. If HMD Global launches the Nokia 7.1 Plus at a price that’s equal or slightly lower than the Moto G6 Plus, Motorola would have a tough time selling the Moto G6 Plus.
