The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro is a capable budget Android smartphone. Launched in February this year, the smartphone may not be the latest, but it still a reliable mobile phone. However, with Motorola Moto P30 with very similar hardware and specifications, buyers have a new option that can offer tough competition to the Redmi Note 5 Pro.
Motorola launched the Moto P30 along with the flagship Moto Z3 and the Moto E5 Plus at an event in China on August 15. Motorola has yet to confirm the smartphone’s availability in India, but mobile phone enthusiasts are confident that the device will hit Indian shores soon as Motorola Android One device.
The Moto P30 is certainly a well-thought smartphone from the Lenovo-owned company. Both the Redmi Note 5 Pro and the Moto P30 have Qualcomm’s octa-core Snapdragon 636 processor with Adreno 509 GPU. They have similar displays and have many other identical features, making the distinction between them a little difficult. It seems the company intends to specifically challenge Xiaomi’s popular large-screened smartphone. And given the specifications, it just might succeed. The Indian pricing for the Motorola Moto P30 isn’t known yet. Interestingly, the device comes in two variants, but both pack the same amount of RAM. Buyers can choose between 64GB or 128GB of internal memory, but the Moto P30 has 6GB of RAM. Interestingly, Xiaomi has taken the opposite approach. The Redmi Note 5 Pro is available with either 4GB or 6GB of RAM, but both the variants get 64GB of internal memory.
Comparing the Moto P30 with Redmi Note 5 Pro reveals that Motorola has packed in double the amount of internal memory. Incidentally, both the smartphones have a hybrid SIM slot to accommodate a micro-SD card for further expansion. Although internal storage matters, higher amount of RAM is always welcome.
Motorola has priced the 6GB RAM + 128GB storage variant of Moto P30 at CNY 2,499, which translates to Rs.25,000 approximately. The similar variant of Redmi Note 5 Pro, with half the internal memory, is currently available on Flipkart. However, it does sport a lower price tag in India. But Motorola might just slash the price of Moto P30 when the device launches in India, giving the device an edge over Xiaomi’s popular smartphone.

The Redmi Note 5 Pro has a rear dual camera with a 12MP primary sensor and the secondary 5MP depth sensor. The Moto P30, on the other hand, has 16MP + 5MP dual-camera setup. Needless to mention, the P30 has a larger primary sensor. This allows the Motorola smartphone to take in a lot of light and details as compared to the Redmi smartphone. Incidentally, the P30 can record videos with up to 4K resolution, while the Redmi Note 5 Pro is limited to Full HD videos only.
Interestingly, the Redmi device beats the Moto mobile in the front camera by packing a 20MP sensor. The P30 has a 12MP front camera. However, the P30 uses larger, 1.25-micrometre pixels as well as a soft toning light for natural-looking images. The front camera has a single sensor but takes portrait shots with bokeh effect thanks to artificial intelligence support.

The Redmi Note 5 Pro, on the other hand, runs on Xiaomi’s own custom MIUI layer that works atop Android OS. Xiaomi is actively developing the custom skin. But it cannot replicate the simplicity of pure, unaltered Android.

The Redmi Note 5 Pro packs a large 4,000mAh battery. On the other hand, Motorola Moto P30 has a much smaller 3,000mAh battery. However, the Motorola smartphone gets Turbo Charge support. Moreover, Motorola bundles a powerful charger that offers 15W and 18W fast charging.
The Redmi Note 5 Pro does have Fast Charging, but it has support for only the second generation of QuickCharge. Also, the handset misses out on Type-C reversible USB port that the Moto P30 has.

The Redmi Note 5 Pro is almost seven months old, and interestingly, still going strong. The Motorola Moto P30 launched a month ago in China. However, the Redmi smartphone is currently available, and there are several attractive offers including, discounts, cash-back, no-cost EMI, exchange bonus, etc.
The Moto P30 is yet to launch officially in India. In extension, its price currently remains a mystery. However, this gives Motorola a very unique advantage. It can choose to price the smartphone very aggressively, thereby possibly undercutting the Redmi Note 5 Pro. Interestingly, the Moto P30 recently went on sale on September 15 in China. Motorola has all the time to figure out the India pricing for its smartphone.
