Reliance Jio Turns 2: From Launching of Jio 4G to Jio Phone 2, Jio GigaFiber, Here’s What You Should Know

On September 05, Reliance Jio turned two. It was on the very same day in 2016 Jio entered the telecom space with unlimited talk time and data at zero cost. Since its launch, the Mukesh Ambani led telco has gone from strength to strength and in two short years has managed to surpass bigger names to emerge as a competitor.

Reliance Jio: Industry Disruptor

Two years since its launch, Jio has managed to disrupt the telecom sector with its affordable tariff plans while offering higher data and call services. To begin with, in December 2015, more than one-lakh Reliance employees took part in its 4G services ‘beta-testing’. In January 2016, the company’s Wi-Fi services were introduced. Jio 4G came into the market with a promise of 10 times the normal download speed and four times the upload speed, challenging the existing industry norms.

Reliance Jio LYF 4G Smartphones

Before the launch of its 4G services, Jio introduced its budget 4G enabled smartphone brand LYF in the market in March 2016. In April 2016, its website jio.com went live with hosts of apps including JioSecurity, JioMoney, JioJoin, JioDrive, JioXpressNews, JioMags, JioBeats, JioOnDemand, JioPlay, JioChat, MyJio, attracting consumers from all bandwidth. Finally, on 1st September 2016, zero charges on voice calling and no roaming charges were introduced for existing Jio customers pan India.

Reliance Jio Prime

In December 2016, Reliance Jio announced its intention to extended the zero cost Wi-Fi, data, and video services, for another three months. Jio Prime was introduced to the subscribers in February 2017. By April 2017, Reliance Jio’s paid subscribers totaled to an astounding 108.9 million. In less than a year, Reliance Jio had penetrated the closely guarded telecom market and literally swept the rug from under everyone’s feet.

Reliance Jio GigaFiber and Jio Phone 2 Launch

At the 2018 Annual General Meeting, Reliance Jio’s head Mukesh Ambani announced the launch of its budget smartphone successor, JioPhone 2 and the ambitious Jio GigaFiber, a broadband service slated to connect every home and every business in the country with fiber cables providing them with unmatched Wi-Fi speed at competitive prices. Besides which the wired broadband service would offer internet TV with set-top box and with an intention to evolve into a home automation system.

Budgeted JioPhone2 comes preloaded with apps like Google Maps, WhatsApp, Youtube, and Facebook.

Reliance Jio Financials, Subscriber Numbers

Entering the telecom market backed by cheap tariff plans, the Mukesh Ambani led telco hit 100 million users within its first 170 days of the launch. At 215 million subscribers currently, the company aims to acquire 50 percent of the telecom space by 2020. Jio is aiming to add another 15 million users to its existing subscriber base in the next 15 months. The company’s standalone net revenue increased 19.9 percent to a whopping Rs.612 crore in the quarter ending on June 30, 2018 from the previous quarter.

At the Quarter ended June 2018, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) reveals that Bharti Airtel leads the market with a subscriber base of an impressive 344.56 million, following in stands Vodafone India with 222.73 million subscribers, with Idea Cellular next in line with 220.60 million users, flanked by Reliance Jio in the end with 215.26 million subscribers.

Though, with the merger of Vodafone and Idea, the market share has changed considerably now. However, despite Vodafone Idea becoming a merged entity and the biggest telecom provider in the country, Reliance Jio is still a major threat to other companies.

With its affordable range of plans and devices, Reliance Jio has a seemingly brighter future than the other telcos in India. The company has also forayed into video content production recently, which is yet another budding market arena in India. With all the initiatives up its sleeves, Reliance Jio may go on to become an even tougher competitor.
