Sony to Announce Two New Full-Frame Sensors: Report

Sony is gearing up to launch two new sensors with new and improved features, SonyAlpha Rumors reported. The publication mentions with utmost certainty that the upcoming Sony sensors touch the periphery of what is to come in the next-gen cameras. Of the duo, one is a 60MP sensor which is capable of recording 8K videos. It also brings 16 channels and is capable of shooting 4.6fps at 16bit. The other one is a 36MP sensor that gets on-chip PDAF. This sensor can shoot 10fps at 16bits. Both the sensors will be available for Sony cameras as well as the third-party manufacturers.

The publication further reports that the sensors will bring features like Weighted pixel binning, DOL-HDR, which is available on a lot of existing sensors. What’s new is a dual-gain ADC mode that enhances the dynamic range of the sensor by up to 2 stops. However, the sensor loses speed over it (almost 50%). The details of this feature are still under the wraps. The Digital Overlap HDR (DOL-HDR) allows you to shoot two frames practically simultaneously. It’s like an enhanced version of bracketing where you take multiple shots to get the right picture. Here, the time interval between the two frames is 1/6000 sec, which is almost like capturing two frames at the same time.

Furthermore, the weighted pixel binning further enhances the quality while capturing a video in that mode. This feature is not new to Sony sensors. Overall, the specifications look great on paper, especially, the 8K video recording. Let’s see when the company takes the wraps off the new full-frame sensors.

Sony has recently confirmed the long-anticipated launch of its A7S III camera. However, the company also stated that it would take time to come out. It’s been three years since its predecessor hit the market. Users have been waiting for the A7S III to come out for a long time. The company is reportedly working on releasing new stuff for the APS-C users. Since both the sensors and the A7S III are yet to come out, we are expecting they come in a single body. Sony might use these sensors in its other high-end cameras as well.
