There’s a new mode for Google Photos called Express for backups aimed at India

Even with Reliance Jio causing tidal waves in the telecoms sector, bringing more affordable data to the residents of India, many still need to watch their data usage. Many take the luxury of having access to a reliable, unlimited, and fast mobile connection for granted, but not everyone is quite so lucky. If data is a concern, then one of the biggest data hogs on Android is Google Photos without the right settings.

Google Photos has the ability to synchronize all your pictures and videos on your smartphone and can do so even over a cellular connection. If you’re not careful, Google Photos can eat up a shed load of data in no time at all. However, Google has acknowledged the potential for this user experience and in a bid to protect against it has added a new option to granularly control the amount of data Google Photos can use when backing up pictures and video.

Raja Ayyagari, Product Manager of Google Photos, talked about an upcoming feature that Google is calling “Express.” The new option will appear in the settings for the backups and allows Photos to reduce the file size of the file to upload a compressed version of the photo. This is different to the high-quality setting currently available that will save a version of the picture in a reduced resolution but will take it one step further by compressing the file size to use a minimal amount of data. The backups, therefore, will be faster and use much less data than the current backup options available to the user.

In addition to the “Express” backup option, Google Photos will be getting a fine tune for how much data the app can use. Users will now be able to restrict the data used to back up pictures to as low as 5MB. This means that the two new settings will result in a lower consumption of data thanks to the new compression of the files and users can now allocate a specific allowance for these backups.

These new features will begin rolling out in India first where the ability to better control data consumption is very important, and will eventually be available in other markets.
