Xiaomi released two Android One devices earlier this year called the Mi A2 and Mi A2 Lite. The devices provided a vanilla Android experience while also taking advantage of budget pricing.
The Mi A2, powered by the Snapdragon 660, and Mi A2 Lite, powered by the Snapdragon 625, have gone on to be wildly popular devices. This is despite the Mi A2 being in the spotlight recently for a suspected eMMC issue that is causing the device to lag under load.
Xiaomi, to help support the developer community, released the kernel source code for both devices publicly but this was for Android Oreo. The two devices have recently received the Android Pie treatment and to mark the occasion, Xiaomi has followed through by releasing the kernel source code for the Xiaomi Mi A2 directly from GitHub.
The availability of the kernel source code will help kickstart the developer community and has already spawned some ROMs and mods for the Xiaomi Mi A2 over on the XDA Forums.
It’s great to see Xiaomi embracing the developer community by publicly releasing the necessary kernel code to allow much of what is required to be interpreted to be bypassed and the developers concentrate on creating ROMs.
Xiaomi Mi A2 Specs
The Xiaomi Mi A2 packs a Snapdragon 660 with an upgraded dual camera array that sees a 12-megapixel f/1.8 lens paired with a 20-megapixel f/1.8 lens, as well as a 20-megapixel f/2.2 camera with phase-detection autofocus, AI Scene Detection, and an AI-powered Portrait Mode. You’ll get a 5.99-inch LTPS IPS LCD 1080 x 2160 display with 77.4% screen-to-body ratio and 403 pixels-per-inch. The Mi A2 is offered in three configurations – 4GB RAM with 32GB storage, a 4GB RAM option with 64GB of storage, and finally a 6GB RAM options with 128GB storage.
The Xiaomi Mi A2 is available in India for ₹ 16,999.
