Folks at XDA-Developers have dug deep into the leaked firmware of the Galaxy Fold, and they have found a new device, which they think is the unannounced Galaxy Tab S5. And more importantly, they have discovered that the Galaxy Tab S5 might feature the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset.
To be precise, folks at XDA-Developers have pulled the defconfig, which is a Linux kernel configuration file, from the Galaxy Fold’s firmware. It has a list of codenames of all the devices from Samsung that feature the Snapdragon 855 chipset. And the list includes the codename GT5SL. Now, the Galaxy Tab S2 has the codename GTS2, the Galaxy Tab S3 has the codename GT3SL, and the Galaxy Tab S4 has the codename GT4SL. So, it is only obvious that the Galaxy GT5SL is the codename for the Galaxy Tab S5. As the GT5SL codename has been found in the list of devices which feature Snapdragon 855 SoC, it is evident that the Galaxy Tab S5 will come with the Snapdragon 855 chipset. Unfortunately, that’s all the Galaxy Fold’s firmware reveals.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab S5 will come as the successor to the Galaxy Tab S4 that launched last year. Speaking of Galaxy Tab S4, people were quite disappointed with the tablet, as it in spite of being a 2018 device, had the 2017’s flagship chipset, the Snapdragon 835. Well, considering the new information obtained by XDA-Developers, it looks like Samsung isn’t making the same mistake again. If the news from XDA-Developers is to be believed, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S5 will have the 2019’s flagship chipset.
When Will the Galaxy Tab S5 Launch?
So far, we don’t have any information regarding the launch date of the Galaxy Tab S5. However, considering that the Galaxy Tab S4 was launched just before the Galaxy Note 9, it is possible that Samsung might launch the Galaxy Tab S5 just before the launch of the Galaxy Note 10, which is expected to happen sometime in September. So, expect the Galaxy Tab S5 to launch in August-September.
