Future Huawei Phones Can’t Use SD Cards, USB, and Wi-Fi, Company Barred From Using These Technologies

The US-China trade war is turning out to be brutal for Huawei Technologies. The company first lost Google support, and now things are turning even worse as it loses out on the membership to SD. Association. According to a report by SumahoInfo, Huawei has been de-listed from the website of SD. Association. Without the membership, Huawei will have to get a relevant license through other sources to use SD or microSD card on its upcoming phones.

Huawei Gets De-Listed From SD Association Member Page

The SD Association decides the standards for SD and microSD cards. The Association’s FAQ page suggests that the members are a part of the design and development process of the devices that use SD standards. The report by Sumahoinfo states that the members’ page included Huawei’s name until a few weeks back, but it is no longer there. Later, in a statement given to AndroidAuthority, the SD Association confirmed that it is complying with the U.S. Department of Commerce that has listed Huawei on the Entity List.

Reacting on being de-listed from SD Association, Huawei’s spokesperson said that microSD cards would still work on the existing phones. However, the company spokesperson declined to comment on the fate of the upcoming phones with microSD card slots. The company is already in talks with Google to come out with an alternative solution to the issue concerning Android support. The US-China trade war has had the biggest impact on Huawei, and now it remains to be seen if it will affect other Chinese OEMs too.

Huawei has been put on ‘Entity List’ by the US government, which means that the government believes that Huawei may be impairing American interests. Being on the list means that Huawei cannot receive any item or funding without the approval of the US governments. Moreover, President Trump has signed an executive order that bans the usage and sale of telecommunications equipment from the manufacturers deemed threatening to national security.

Huawei To Launch its Own Operating System, Trademarks ‘Honemeng’ in China

Recent reports suggest that Huawei is working on its own operating system. The company is said to be working on it for three years as an alternative to Android. As of now, the timeline for the release of the new OS has not been revealed by any source, but it is expected that the company could take several months before making the new OS official.

Huawei has reportedly filed for the trademark ‘Hongmeng’ with China’s National Intellectual Property Administration. The trademark office’s website reveals that Huawei filed for it on August 24, 2018, and it will be valid until May 13, 2029. The company will launch the OS in China first.
