Punes Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope detects second-largest cosmic explosion in the Ophiuchus Galaxy

It looks like our very own Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope in Pune has actually detected a gigantic explosion that took place at the centre of the Ophiuchus Galaxy. Located about 390 million light-years away from Eart, the explosion was picked up by the GMRT in Pune. This breakthrough was achieved by a team of international astronomers as they confirmed the detection of the explosion.

Experts say that this is the second-largest explosion after the Big Bang. If what they say is accurate then this is the largest explosion in the known universe that we have been a witness of. The explosion was originally observed by NASA’s Chandra X-Ray telescope and was confirmed after studying combined data using Pune’s Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope, the Murchison Widefiled Array (MWA) and the XMM-Newton X-Ray telescope.

An official from the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA) issued a statement which said, “Using GMRT data, the researchers got an improved radio image of the radio source. It complemented well with the frequency coverage of the Australian MWA telescope while providing higher resolution for a more detailed look at the cluster”.

Researchers say that the explosion and subsequent cavity was a result of a massive wave of energy that was released when the explosion first took place. It left a dent-like structure.

NCRA Director Yashwant Gupta says, “It is like mining the archived data and re-using them. Even in the future, we can use such archived data for some bright ideas or newer discoveries. We expect more discoveries and interesting results to emerge using GMRT’s archived data”

Google Relaunched Homework Assistance App Socratic On Android

Google Relaunched Homework Assistance App Socratic On Android

Google has launched Socratic, a mobile-based learning app that supports enhancements in Google Play Store for Android devices with artificial intelligence (AI). This AI-based app is designed to offer all high school and college students need in one location.

Socratic launched back on iOS for the first time, originally known as Smart Homework. The app, designed to provide you with tools and advice about your job without doing it for you straight away, analyzes pictures taken from worksheets and provides relevant information based on what they scan.

Google acquired Socratic in March 2018, which was available on Android devices in 2017, and last year launched its revised version for iOS devices.

It’s marketed to endorse most high school subjects, including Algebra, Biology, Chemistry, Geometry, and Trigonometry. One way to find answers is to search on Google.com, but the company now provides a more focused learning-catered searching experience.

Chris Pedregal and Shreyans Bhansali formed Socrátictic in 2013. The app initially offered a Quora-like Q&A forum where students would be able to ask questions that experts had answered.

By the time Socratic raised $6 million in Series A funding back in 2015, it had expanded to about 500,000 students in its culture. Later the business grew to focus less on linking users and more on usefulness.

There are over 1,000 subject guides on the app that would cover high school and higher education topics. The study guides allow its users to study or go over a specific topic through key or highlighted points.

When using the app, it only takes two taps for the user to see with which topic they needed help. The platform links to various resources that can be found on the web if the user wishes to learn more.

Citroen announces Ami all-electric light quadricycle with 70km range

Citroën has announced in France a new all-electric light quadricycle called Ami. Designed to compete with the Renault Twizy electric quadricycle that has been around in the European market since 2012, the Citroën Ami is capable of delivering a driving range of up to 70 kilometres on a single charge and a claimed top speed of 45 kilometres per hour. The Citroën Ami will be available in France from March 30 and in Spain, Italy, Belgium, Portugal, and Germany a few months later.

Being a quadricycle, the Citroën Ami is about the same size as the Bajaj Qute that sells in India. Thanks to its symmetric exterior components, the Citroën Ami looks more or less the same whether it’s viewed from the front or back. In fact, Citroën has fitted a rear-hinged door on the driver’s side and a front-hinged door on the passenger’s side to maintain symmetry in the car’s design. On the inside, the little French quadricycle has two seats and a small dashboard with a dedicated smartphone holder.

The Citroën Ami is powered by a flat 5.5kWh lithium-ion battery that is housed under the floor. Citroën says it can be charged fully in three hours using a domestic 220V power socket and the bundled charging cable. Citroën also says that, since the Ami is considered a quadricycle in Europe, it can be driven with or without a valid driving licence. In France, drivers over the age of 14 can drive an Ami if they have earned a road safety certificate.

The new Citroën Ami comes with purchase, car sharing, and long-term rental options. It can be bought for 6,000 euros (Rs 4.77 lakh approx) as an online order or from a Citroën showroom. Alternatively, it can be rented on a long-term basis (48 months) for 19.99 euros (Rs 1,590 approx) a month after an initial payment of 2,644 euros (Rs 2.10 lakh approx). There’s also a car sharing option available through intermediary Free2Move, which lets a subscriber borrow the Citroën Ami at 0.26 (Rs 20.69) per minute. We don’t know at the moment if or when Citroën will launch the Ami in India.

Flashback: LG G3 pioneered 1440p phone screens and Laser AF

The LG G2 showed the world that a screen with thin bezels is a great thing. The LG G3 pushed that design further with a larger and sharper display - the first 1440p panel in the industry. And it came surprisingly fast. LG G3 The HTC Butterfly had the first 1080p screen on mobile, it came out in January 2013. A year and a half later, the G3 arrived with the first-ever 1440p display. Technically, Oppo announced the Find 7 first, but LG was first to market so we think it's fair to call the G3 "first". The 5.5-inch "True HD-IPS+" LCD panel had a pixel density of 534ppi, which is...

OnePlus 6, OnePlus 6T receive OxygenOS 1032 with February 2020 security patch

OnePlus has generally pushed software updates out to its devices in a timely fashion. In the latest instance of this positive trend, the Chinese electronics manufacturer is rolling out the latest OxygenOS 10.3.2 software as an over-the-air update to the OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T. The update, which contains the latest security patch for Android, is currently being rolled out in a staged manner. If you own either of the models, you can expect to see the notification update pop up anytime now.

According to OnePlus Global Product Operations Manager Manu J, the new OxygenOS 10.3.2 update carries the latest February 2020 security patch for Android. In addition, it comes with a fix for a previously reported bug that causes the screen to flicker when the user is swiping up from the lock screen to unlock the device. Lastly, the update contains fixes for some ‘general bugs’ and improves the overall system stability. Read the changelog published by OnePlus here.

According to some of the OnePlus Community members, the new update indeed fixes the screen flickering issue in the lock screen but fails to bring a solution for a notch-related complaint that began with Android 10. According to many users on the forum, Android 10 does not ‘hide’ (blacken) the status bar around the display notch the way Android 9 Pie did. Instead it pushes the entire status bar below the notch, thus wasting some essential screen space.

The OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T received their last software update to OxygenOS 10.3.1 exactly one month ago, which contained a long list of system-level bug fixes. Apart from carrying the December 2019 security patch for Android, the OxygenOS 10.3.1 update fixed a critical camera crash issue and optimised the image preview time in Pro mode. It also fixed a disconnection issue many users reportedly faced while using 5GHz Wi-Fi hotspot. You can read more about the fixes in the previous software update here.

Apple ARM-Based Macs To Come Soon To Market

Apple ARM-Based Macs To Come Soon To Market

According to respected KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple launched their first ARM-based Mac without an Intel chipset early next year.

“We expect that Apple’s new products in 12–18 months will adopt processors made by 5nm process, including the new 2H20 5G iPhone, new 2H20 iPad equipped with mini LED, and new 1H21 Mac equipped with the own-design processor,” Kuo wrote.

Kuo made a similar prediction in 2018, shortly after a series of news reports published around two years ago first said Apple should analyze Intel CPU’s to concentrate on its own custom-built ARM architecture-based processors. So it looks as if the initial Kuo forecast holds for a release date of 2021.

The company moved the Mac back in 1994 from its initial Motorola 68000 series platform to the Target (Apple-IBM-Motorola) PowerPC chip alliance. Then the Mac changed platform again in 2006, from PowerPC to Intel, where it remains at present.

Both times, the key to a successful transition was emulation software that allowed applications written for the previous platform to run until native versions were available, without too much performance hit.

The first Mac with an ARM processor could allow Apple to track the Mac release schedule more closely and provide improvements, such as improved battery life. But it may be facing challenges to ensure that the applications running on Mac computers still run on the new models, as the processors are different.

The next Mac with an Apple-designed processor, the 2020 aluminum iPhone and a high-end aluminum iPad with a mini LED display expected to use 5-nanometer chips for the second half of 2020.

Chips built on a 5-nanometer node will be faster and more efficient than the A13 chips used in the new iPhones built on a process of 7-nanometer+.

Apple has never been on record admitting that it will ditch Intel for Mac CPUs, but the company’s job listings over the past few years have highlighted its plans to trim chipmaker reliance and develop its own processors.

OnePlus to reveal something on March 3, and its not the OnePlus 8

There’s never a dull moment for the people at OnePlus. Just as the hype around the OnePlus Concept One was starting to simmer down, OnePlus UK’s twitter handle has announced the existence of another new product. A short video on the Twitter page lists March 3 2020 as the reveal date.

The video shows a collection of pipes and metallic structures, without giving a clear idea of what the device could be. According to OnePlus UK’s tweet, this is not a smartphone or even a commercial product for that matter, leading us to believe that OnePlus may be gearing up to reveal another concept project to the world.

Analysing the video, there seems to be a myriad of suggestions in there. At initial glance, the metallic parts seem to resemble the inside of a watch, but then we see a pipe-like structure that’s more commonly associated with the type of lens known as the probe lens. Briefly, we also see the number 6 machined into the side of one of the panels. Needless to say, the video is not giving much away, but thankfully, the official reveal is only a few days away.

OnePlus is expected to launch the OnePlus 8 and the OnePlus 8 Pro in the coming months, expectedly a little sooner than usual. Usually, OnePlus themselves start releasing bits of official information about the phone ahead of launch, and since that hasn’t happened yet, we can assume that this teaser is not for the phone. OnePlus also recently showed off the Concept One, a smartphone that the company said will not be available for sale. The smartphone’s main USP was the electrochromic glass that was used to cover the camera assembly, making the cameras completely disappear when not in use. OnePlus also said that the glass could double us as a neutral density filter.

Google Authenticator app no longer safe thanks to new malware

Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) was the industry’s answer to curbing illegitimate access for online accounts. This was especially the case to prevent bank accounts from being hacked and was eventually utilized by companies like Google, Facebook, Apple etc. Now a new security threat claims to be able to steal 2FA codes from the Google Authenticator.

According to Threatfabric, new Android malware is capable of stealing 2FA codes from Google’s app. Typically apps like Google’s 2FA or even Microsoft’s App for that matter are considered safer than the SMS method of receiving 2FA codes. This was because SMS isn’t transmitted over a secure protocol and can be intercepted. Then there’s the additional threat of SIM cloning that has led to multiple counts of banking fraud in the past. Now, it would appear that Google’s 2FA app has also been proven to be vulnerable.

According to Threatfabric, the malware is not yet being distributed or advertised on underground forums, suggesting that the hack may still be in testing stages. What we don’t know yet is whether the malware is exploiting something in the Android OS or a weakness in Google’s 2FA app to gain access to the codes. The report only lists the vulnerability to impact Android, meaning iOS users are still secure. This could also mean that the vulnerability exploits a combined vulnerability in Android and the 2FA app. There is also no information on whether the malware would make other 2FA apps vulnerable, but in either case, it is something to be supremely worried about.
