Oppo Reportedly Set to Bring Its Proprietary Mobile Processors

Oppo is expected to develop its own internal mobile processors chips. This is reportedly confirmed in an internal note shared with all employees

A trademark listing filed with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) has suggested, according to the report, that Oppo’s first proprietary mobile processor chip would be called as the Oppo M1.

It is widely speculated that the company has hired Spreadtrum and MediaTek engineers to work on their first mobile processing chip.

The report also states that Oppo is said to have Yan Chen, the earlier leading engineer at Qualcomm Ventures, working on project developments such as Oppo M1 and Hawkey chips.

He has experience working on processes for the development of Qualcomm SH Android, and companies including Xiaomi, Huawei and Oppo are deploying the Qualcomm MSM8939 (Snapdragon 615) SoC on their devices.

Oppo is said to be following in the footsteps of Huawei and Xiaomi in designing its mobile processing chips in-house.

Huawei already has its HiSilicon Kirin range of proprietary mobile processors as an alternative to MediaTek and Qualcomm deliverables.Samsung has its Exynos chips designed for their Galaxy phones.

With the Surge S1 SoC debuted on the Mi 5c smartphone, Xiaomi‘s attempts to venture into the same room did not reach any markets other than China. It has not been able to make success of its first in-house chip.

Developing in-house processors are beneficial for smartphone manufacturers as it reduces the dependency on other companies such as Qualcomm and MediaTek and helps in decreasing the price of the product.
