Korean game developer and publisher house Krafton has announced that PUBG Corp, the developers behind PUBG Mobile and the upcoming PUBG Mobile India, is being officially merged into its parent company. By doing so, Krafton is also rebranding PUBG Corp into PUBG Studio, and the rebranding will also reflect on the overall operations of the game development brand. Going forth, PUBG Studio will be focused on the core development of PUBG Mobile (including regional subsidiaries such as PUBG Mobile India). This would involve developing season-wise narratives, new maps, weapons and characters, clothing, skins and more for the game.
Furthermore, PUBG Studio would also be heavily involved in setting up official esports and entertainment tournaments for PUBG Mobile and other variants of the game. PUBG has so far been particularly noted for its widespread support of the gaming community, arranging regional and international gaming tournaments based on PUBG Mobile all around the world. In essence, PUBG Corp will continue its core work in the same nature, under the moniker of PUBG Studio. However, not all things PUBG will be solely handled by PUBG Studio.
As confirmed by Krafton in a press statement, its second game studio, Striking Distance, has been tasked with developing a new game from scratch. The game is expected to be set on PUBG’s premise, but will apparently be a AAA title, and come with a set gameplay storyline. As a result, Striking Distance’s development may lead to a PUBG title that would feature traditional shooter gameplay for the first time, instead of the battle royale gameplay that the original Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds popularised on PCs. In ways, this would tread the exact opposite path as Call of Duty – while the latter first succeeded as a AAA game franchise and then branched as a mobile battle royale, PUBG’s publisher seemingly aims to tread the opposite line.
While this should not have any unexpected, direct impact on PUBG Mobile India, the move now means that PUBG, PUBG Mobile and all other related properties are now completely free from any ties that they had to China and Chinese companies. Furthermore, PUBG Studio will likely be the mainstay behind PUBG Mobile India’s gameplay elements, including contextualising its features for the Indian market, when it launches. PUBG Corp was previously noted to have set up an Indian franchise, PUBG India, as a registered Indian company. However, the latter should largely remain an administrative company, and not play any role in designing the game and its features.
