Apple is expected to announce a new MacBook Pro later this year. If rumours are to be believed, the company will unveil its Pro MacBook in September, possibly alongside the iPhone 13 series. As expected, Apple has not revealed any official information on the same. Meanwhile, some key details of the upcoming 2021 Pro laptop have leaked online. The latest development is around the device’s SD card slot that is rumoured to make a comeback. Apple removed the SD slot from the MacBook in 2016. The company is said to bring back the much-beloved card reader on the Pro model later this year. More details around the slot’s standards have leaked online. Let’s take a look at the upcoming MacBook Pro specs, features, and other details.
Apple MacBook Pro to feature upgraded SD card slot
Apple could launch the 2021 MacBook Pro in September. Ahead of the rumoured launch, some key details of the Pro machine have leaked. As mentioned above, the Cupertino tech giant is expected to bring back the SD card slot which was removed from the 2016 MacBooks. Rumours have suggested that the 2021 Pro MacBooks will feature an SD card. A new report from Apple Tracker shares more details on the SD card slot. The report states that the 2021 MacBook Pros will feature a UHS-II SD card slot. This bus interface offers significantly faster read speeds, up to 312mb/s compared to around 100mb/s on standard SD card slots.
So far, only two Apple machines have featured UHS-II SD card readers. These include the 27-inch iMac and the now-discontinued iMac Pro. The addition of a UHS-II card will be a huge upgrade for photographers and videographers. Moreover, it is backwards compatible, meaning that older devices and readers will support the UHS-II card. The speed, however, will vary from device to device.
Several other details of the upcoming 2021 model have leaked in the past. The new Pro MacBooks are also tipped to get a redesigned chassis and magnetic charging, according to a Bloomberg report. They will also come with multiple ports, including the HDMI port and SD card slot. Another thing coming back is the function keys. A recent report claimed that Apple could ditch the touch bar in favour of function keys on the upcoming MacBook Pros.
It is rumoured to feature 14-inch and 16-inch screen sizes with a mini-LED display. These new models are tipped to get an upgraded 1080p webcam as well. Apple is also rumoured to launch the Pro models with an M1X chip, which is rumoured to be a more powerful version of the M1 chip. The company is reportedly working on two versions of M1X chips for the MacBook codenamed Jade C-Chop and Jade C-Die. Both chips will feature eight high-performance cores and two energy-efficient cores. The difference will lie in the GPU. Either model will come with 16 or 32 GPU cores. It is also rumoured to support up to 64GB of RAM as opposed to 16GB of the current M1 models.
Some reports previously claimed that the 14-inch model will enter mass production in Q4 2021. The 16-inch model, on the other hand, is tipped to enter mass production in Q1 2022. Others claim that Apple will announce the Pro MacBooks in September. However, they will go on sale in October or later.
