Apple’s Smart Speaker – HomePod is looking towards some changes in its software to compete in the already developed Smart Assistants products providing an array of features (by Amazon and Google). Apple’s smart speaker is being tested (HomePod’s iOS 12 based Beta) with software which can include the native phone call support and multiple timers.
The new features:
The native phone call support system in the smart speaker would then allow iPhone users to place and receive calls from the HomePod than calling from their iPhones (and then having to switch audio inputs). The smartphone would then be only required for the cellular connection and of course, you could be an earshot away from the iPhone’s speaker.
The second feature expected to be added (like the Google Assistant and Amazon Alexas’ products) is that Apple’s HomePod could also be used to set multiple timers for multitasking home chores such as cooking and laundry. Additionally, the beta testing is being conducted for including a HomePod version of Find My iPhone, support for the Spanish language, and a “fix WiFi” feature that can enable a connection between iPhone and the HomePod (previously, resetting of the HomePod was required).
Though Apple promised multi-speaker stereo and AirPlay 2 to the HomePod much later than promised in 2017, Apple still might make the cut for these additional features on time. And though the HomePod still lacks the multi-user voice recognition available in its rivals, Apple must bring these features on quickly to increase its sales and make it easier to sell to its customers who wish to have more than just a music player.
Apple’s HomePod has been originally designed as more of a speaker than an assistant. It has an excellent sound system and responds to the user’s demands quickly. However, it does not support the Bluetooth system or audio inputs. And with the technology and customer choices and usage changing at lightning speeds, it is no wonder that Apple needs to compete and make changes to make it an Assistant too.
