Reacting to the postpaid plans recently launched by Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio, and Vodafone Idea Ltd, government-owned telco BSNL just introduced a new postpaid plan for Rs.299. But the new combo postpaid plan, unlike the ones introduced by the private telecom operators, is only for new subscribers joining the network.
Rs.299 Bundled Postpaid Plan
The new postpaid plan for Rs.299 offers the new subscribers unlimited data, unlimited voice calls, and unlimited SMS benefits every month. Under this plan, the postpaid user will get 31GB of data per month. Unlike other postpaid plans by BSNL, this plan offers unlimited data wherein after consumption of 31GB of data, the user will continue receiving data, but at a speed of 80 Kbps.
Unlimited free calls are valid for all calls made to any network in BSNL’s operational circles. This means that free calling is not offered to its subscribers in the Delhi and Mumbai circles because Delhi and Mumbai fall under MTNL, the other PSUs owned by the government, and is not part of BSNL’s 20 operational circles. Along with is the 100 SMS daily benefit, for the validity period.
The Rs.299 plan reflects only the base price of the pack without having added the GST to it. The postpaid plan is exclusive to new users only. Existing BSNL users can’t subscribe to this plan. With this move, the telco is trying to add to its already existing postpaid user base.

Limitation of Rs.299 Postpaid Plan
Airtel and Vodafone Idea Ltd offer a data roll-over feature along with their postpaid plans. This is an added benefit to the postpaid user who gets his unused data from the previous month carried forwarded and added to the data of the current month and so forth. This allows the user to have more data to use each month and not worry about losing unused data.
For example, in an Airtel postpaid plan of Rs. 349, the user gets 30GB of data every month with rollover facility with a maximum of 500GB, along with unlimited voice calls, and SMS benefits for the pack duration.
In spite of offering innumerable plans with competitive benefits, BSNL is losing out to the private telecom operators in this matter.
Rs.299 BSNL Postpaid Plan vs Rs.299 Vodafone RED Plan
Airtel currently has no postpaid plan in this price segment but Vodafone has a RED Basic plan, which for Rs.299 offers voice, data, and SMS benefits to its subscribers. In this plan, the user gets 20GB of data, 100 SMS, and unlimited voice calling without limited by FUP, every month.
In comparison, BSNL is offering 31GB of data to its new subscriber for the same amount. But even though the data offered per month is increased, with no data rollover feature, the user will have to consume the entire 31GB in the same month every month, unlike with postpaid plans of Airtel and Vodafone Idea Ltd.
Rs.299 BSNL Postpaid Plan vs Rs.199 Reliance Jio Postpaid Plan
Reliance Jio’s Rs.199 postpaid plan offers 25GB of data along with unlimited calls and 100 SMS daily benefits to its subscriber.

Even though the BSNL Rs.299 postpaid plan is Rs.100 expensive than the Rs.199 Reliance Jio postpaid plan, it also offers per month 6GB of data more. Also, both plans offer unlimited voice calling but where BSNL is limited to extending this service to its Delhi and Mumbai subscribers, Reliance Jio faces no such restrictions.
