So you finally pulled the trigger and got a brand new OnePlus 6, but now what? We take a look at some of the five things to do with your new device to get the most out of it and unlock its potential.
While you don’t necessarily need to do these things to enjoy your new OnePlus 6, you arguably won’t be getting the most out of the device if you don’t utilize these features.
Turn off the notch
So let’s start off with a controversial one, to begin with – the OnePlus 6 enables you to turn off the notch. While that statement contradicts the laws of physics, OnePlus are simply employing some trickery to hide the notch.
OnePlus introduced a notched display on the OnePlus 6 to achieve a bezel-less display to allow the glass to wrap around a cutout in the middle of the screen that has to stay to house the front-facing camera and sensors.
As part of OxygenOS, OnePlus allows you to hide the notch by reverting the space either side of the notch to black and thus making it appear like the notch is hidden. Be sure to check out our guide here on how to turn off the notch.
Save dual photos
The OnePlus 6 captures some pretty good-looking portrait shots, but there could be an option where a background full of bokeh isn’t what to may want. That opportunity may present itself a while after you snapped the actual photo, but luckily OnePlus allows you to save both the bokeh version and the standard version.
This is super useful if the background blur perhaps doesn’t look quite right or perhaps doesn’t fit the occasion.
Just head into the camera settings and under the “Portrait” section, toggle the option to “Save normal photo”.
Set up Face Unlock
While the OnePlus 6 comes with a fingerprint sensor, the device also comes with the ability to unlock the device using just by looking at it. You’re prompted to set up Face Unlock during initial setup, but if for some reason you’ve previously skipped that or someone else completed the initial setup for you, then you can retrospectively go ahead and register your face to unlock the OnePlus 6.
It’s simple to do, just go into Settings – Security – Security and Lock Screen – Face Unlock.
The device will guide you through the process so next time you want to unlock your device, turn the screen on and just stare at the OnePlus 6 for a few seconds.
Navigation gestures
There’s no ignoring the option in Android Pie for the Pixel devices to saw the removal of the traditional navigation bar in favor of gestures.
The OnePlus has the option to enable gestures like the Pixel and iPhone X to further maximize the screen real-estate.
You have a few options to choose, so have a play with the settings and see which one takes you fancy.
Enable wake options
If you want to get down to business as soon as you pick your phone up then the OnePlus 6 has you covered. You have the ability to get right into your apps as soon as you pick up your device and your device will wake up.
Head into Settings – Display – “Ambient Display” – “Lift up display”.
You can then also head into the “Gestures” section to switch on the ability to wake the device with a double tap on the screen.
Wrap up
