At the IFA 2018, Google made a new announcement about its Google Fit health and fitness tracker. It added two new features to its Google Fit device: Move Minutes and Heart Points. It zeroed in on these features based on the recommendations of the American Heart Association (AHA) and the World Health Organization (WHO), with whom it has partnered “to understand the science behind physical activity and help you get the amount and intensity needed to improve your health”. Both the AHA and the WHO recommend activity that amounts to 30 minutes of brisk walking five days a week to ensure physical and well-being apart from improved sleep and fitness.
Google said to be working on a health and fitness wearable called ‘Google Coach’
The Move Minutes feature encourages users to move more and sit less throughout the day by making small changes towards one’s health. It encourages users to switch to healthier options such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator or catching up with friends over a walk instead of a coffee. On the other hand, Heart Points gives credits for more physically strenuous exercises that get your heart pumping. For each minute of moderate activity such as picking up the pace while walking your dog, it gives one point, and for more intense activities such as running or kickboxing, it gives double points.
Google’s wearable will detect all of these activities through your phone or watch sensors such as accelerometer and GPS to give points accordingly. Furthermore, you can even customize this feature by adding your favourite activities such as gardening, pilates, rowing or spinning to the app. In case you use a different fitness app to track your data, Google Fit can also be integrated with apps such as Strava, Runkeeper, Endomondo and MyFitnessPal to keep your information consistent in all places.
The device also offers tips to help you reach your goals. It also keeps a track of your progress and shows your activities, achievements across all apps.
These changes are being rolled out this week, so if you already have the Google Fit device chances are you will see these features rolled out on your phone or smartwatch in the coming few days.
