The PureView Trademark has now been acquired by HMD Global from Microsoft. In 2014, Microsoft got the PureView brand as part of their acquisition of Nokia’s Devices and Services Division. As per the agreement, HMD Global now has an exclusive use of the PureView brand though it is yet to be seen if any of the Nokia models will feature the trademark.
PureView Brand
The brand made its global debut around 5 years ago, in January ‘13 with the launch of Nokia 808 PureView. Later on, the brand was introduced to be Symbian OS compatible while simultaneously being introduced in Window powered Nokia Lumia 1520, Lumia 1020, and Lumia 920.
According to trademark listing on EUIPO website, the PureView trademark was filed in January ‘12 and acquired by HMD Global from Microsoft on 23rd August ‘18.
PureView Collaborators
Camera-focused PureView is now HMD Global’s property but it is yet to be seen if other smartphone brands will be using the trademark or not. Besides being part of the HMD group, the brand had in June ‘17 partnered with Zeiss to bring high-end optics to Nokia smartphones. Nokia 8 was launched last year as the first Android-powered Nokia handset with dual rear cameras run by Zeiss optics.
Lumia 950 was the last Nokia model carrying the PureView brand. Even though it was Lumia 1020 and 808 PureView that made Samsung, HTC, and Sony’s flagship models bow down to the PureView brand.

HMD Global Relaunches
Historically, HMD Global likes to play-off Nokia’s nostalgic legacy which previously included Nokia 8110 4G and Nokia 3310. So it is to be assumed that repackaged PureView handsets will be hitting the market soon. Nokia 808 PureView or the 2 generations younger than Nokia 1020 smartphone are speculated to be the ones in line for HMD style of rebranding.
HMD Global’s Arsenal
In another news, after acquiring PureView trademark from Microsoft, HMD is all set to add ‘Pure Display’ and ‘Face Unlock’ features to its kitty. The Finnish tech giant has already filed for the said trademarks.
Leading the Nokia brand globally, HMD hasn’t been very forthcoming with the information on the new trademarks it seeks. The company has only spoken about LED and touchscreens and the use of PureDisplay tech for the screens of tablets, smartphones, and handheld media devices.
With these technologies in tow, everyone’s expecting HMD to revive memorable tech like PureMotion HD+ displays. Nokia’s classic ClearBlack screen had gotten upgraded to the PureMotion HD+ and evolution to featuring a polarizer that reduced glare and offered better screen visibility in sunlight and an improved touch sensitivity. The upgrade also brought the screen operation to a higher frame rate of 60fps to rival the UI as well as reduce drag or motion blur in content.
The ‘Face Unlock’ feature has already long been part of the current Nokia handsets. HMD holds trademarks for other Nokia brand and tech, like Xpress-On and Asha. Though no new development has been made on these fronts by HMD as of yet neither have they issued any official word. Therefore, only speculations regarding the company’s next release with acquired patented upgrades, are on the rise.
