Samsung confirms foldable smartphone release set for later this year

It’s no secret that Samsung is working towards the launch of the foldable smartphone. The handset has been in the news from the last couple months, considering fresh information emerging every now and then from the Korean news publications. As per the CNBC report, Samsung will unveil its first foldable smartphone later this year. Samsung’s CEO DJ Koh while speaking with CNBC has officially confirmed the phone’s existence along with launch details, intimating us that Samsung plans to release this handset later this year.

He stated that “it’s time to deliver” on a foldable device after consumer surveys carried out by the company showed that there is a market for this kind of handset. Furthermore, commenting on the design of this smartphone, Koh stated that Samsung is trying to differentiate the experience from a tablet once it is unfolded. He added that when almost every functioning would be possible when the device is folded, but if you want to carry out some extra things, i.e browse or see something, you may need to unfold it. Further, he also added that “every feature, every innovation should have a meaningful message to our end customer. So when the end customer uses it, (they think) ‘wow, this is the reason Samsung made it’.”

In addition to these many details, CEO Koh even explained that Samsung might unveil this foldable smartphone at the Samsung Developer Conference in November, which is taking place in San Francisco. Koh even acknowledged that the development process of this device is complicated, but somehow Samsung has officially concluded it. If we have a look at the market status, Samsung is facing the stiff competition from the likes of Apple, Huawei and other certain Chinese smartphone giants. To remark its status back once again, Samsung surely is trying to announce this Industry-first foldable smartphone as fast as possible; in a bit to revive lost glory in the market.

By unveiling the first foldable smartphone, Samsung even might be thinking to differentiate from the other OEMs out there. If we recall some highlights of this handset, sources had mentioned in the past that the display used in the device is going to be about 7.3 inches diagonally when opened and around 4.5 inches diagonally when folded. As far as the pricing of this device goes, it could be as high as $1,500 (Rs. 1,02,990). Now that the phone’s existence and launch is already confirmed by Samsung’s CEO, its just the matter of time that in the upcoming few months, we should get the release date of this handset.
