With Xiaomi confirming an imminent global launch for the Mi 8 Pro and Mi 8 Lite, there is quite a buzz even in India, as Xiaomi fans have been eager in wait for Mi 8 series phones here. Both handsets are excellent, with the Lite suffix for a lighter version of the Mi 8 and Pro suffix for the updated version of the Mi 8, which was launched earlier in China and continues to sell very well but unfortunately, was not released in India. Now that we can expect both these phones to come here anytime soon, let’s take a look at what all the phones flaunt, and also what they compete with here.
Mi 8 Pro, Mi 8 Lite: Specifications
The Mi 8 Pro will have an in-display fingerprint sensor even in the global markets, as confirmed on social media by a Xiaomi executive, and the Mi 8 Lite will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 chipset instead of the Qualcomm flagship Snapdragon 845 SoC that powers the Mi 8 and Mi 8 Pro. The Mi 8 Lite will get 4GB and 6GB RAM options while the Mi 8 Pro will get 6GB and 8GB RAM models.
Both handsets will be dual-SIM capable and will sport Full HD+ displays measuring a little over 6.2 inches, but the Mi 8 Pro will get a Super AMOLED display while the Mi 8 Lite will have an IPS LCD display.

Both the Mi 8 Pro and Mi 8 Lite will have excellent camera gear, with the Mi 8 Pro sporting a rear dual 12MP+12MP camera and a 20MP front camera, while the Mi 8 Lite gets a 12MP+5MP rear dual camera and a larger 24MP front camera.
Ironically, the Mi 8 Lite will come to India and end up competing with three handsets that each flaunts a ‘Pro’ badge.
Mi 8 Lite vs Vivo V9 Pro, Realme 2 Pro, Vivo V11 Pro
The Vivo V9 Pro, as we reported earlier in the day, was launched with a surprisingly budget-friendly price of Rs 17,990, even as the Vivo V9 costs more. However, the Vivo V9 Pro comes with a weaker camera setup, with a 16MP front camera and 13MP+2MP dual rear camera. It is powered by the same Snapdragon 660 chipset that powers the Mi 8 Lite, and it sports a similarly tall 6.3-inch Full HD+ IPS LCD display.
The Realme 2 Pro is an upcoming updated version of the Realme 2, and we recently reported that the handset seems to be powered by an underclocked Snapdragon 660 chipset. This handset will also sport a 6.3-inch Full HD+ IPS LCD display, and a dual rear camera. The front camera is rumored to be 8MP, but we will know for sure tomorrow as the phone launches in India on September 27. The expected launch price is under Rs 20,000.
The Vivo V11 Pro costs Rs 25,990 and is the only handset in competition with the Mi 8 Lite to sport an in-display fingerprint sensor. It features a 6.41-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED display, and is powered by the same Snapdragon 660 octa-core processor. Also, this handset gets VOOC fast charging for its 3400mAh battery. Camera wise, it is nothing extraordinary, with a dual 12MP+5MP rear camera, but it does flaunt a powerful 25MP selfie shooter. This, then, is perhaps the most worthy competitor to the Mi 8 Lite.
Mi 8 Pro vs Oppo Find X, LG G7 Plus ThinQ, OnePlus 6
We have written extensively about the flagship handsets that released in India this year. If you haven’t already, do read our review of the OnePlus 6, which is a brilliant smartphone that ticks all the right boxes. The Mi 8 Pro will compete with the Oppo Find X also, which is a costly affair at Rs 59,990 but is really a bezel-free smartphone, with its pop-up cameras for both front and rear, and a solid 8GB RAM.
The phone sports a 6.42-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED display and an excellent 16MP+20MP rear dual camera that pops up from within the body, and the same slider houses a 25MP front camera with Face ID, so you have all the screen space to yourself. This handset, as the OnePlus 6 and Mi 8 Pro, is powered by the Qualcomm flagship Snapdragon 845 processor. You also get VOOC flash charging for its 3730mAh battery.
The LG G7 ThinQ was quietly launched in India in August, and you can but it on Flipkart for Rs 39,990. It is also powered by a Snapdragon 845 processor, and sports a decent dual rear camera with 16MP+16MP setup, but the front camera is a weak 8MP.
The LG handset also gets a 6GB RAM and a Corning Gorilla Glass, with a 6.1-inch Quad HD+ notched display, but it is of the IPS LCD type whereas the competition fares better with Super AMOLED displays. However, the LG G7 ThinQ gets wireless charging, which the other handsets like OnePlus 6 and Oppo Find X don’t.
