Safari’s Siri Suggested Search Results Reveal Fake news and Conspiracy Websites

Safari has always been among one of the top web browsers and one which has always been deemed as reliable. Well, it seems like that is debatable as of now considering that Safari’s Siri Suggested Website is suggesting websites containing objectionable content. The web browser, thanks to Siri, has been surfacing debunked conspiracy theories, misinformation, and objectionable content of a violent nature. Instead of suggesting safe content debunking such theories, the browser is, in fact, recommending it. Unfortunately, the company mainly uses an algorithm to maintain and promote safety and peace, algorithms have a tendency of going off course.

Well, this odd behaviour was posted by Buzzfeed who immediately took the internet to share its finding. Supposedly, if you typed the word “Pizzagate”, instead of suggesting websites with safe content, the browser prompted users to check out “PIZZAGATE, BIGGEST SCANDAL EVER!!!”, a YouTube video made by David Seaman; a man whose YouTube account was shut down for violating its terms owing to his broadcasted content. If you were to be a little more adventurous and test the waters even further by searching for “the holocaust didn’t happen”, you would be suggested websites promoting content which goes against any ounce of human sentiment.

While Apple’s Siri does rely upon Google for its search results, a comparison of the two with regard to popular conspiracy theories, revealed quite opposite findings. Siri in Safari, like before, suggested websites promoting the idea while Google search suggested websites debunking it. Well, it seems like the troublemaker here is definitely a bad algorithm or one which simply messed up.

While this may seem like something trivial, it actually isn’t as it can have a long-lasting impression on young minds. Many children actually browse the internet and something like this can shape their thoughts, views, and opinions in a negative manner. Web pages promoting conspiracy theories, violence, and scandals certainly should not be rated as the top suggestions in any search engine! There’s a silver lining though since it’s a bug with Siri, you can still use Safari safely by disabling Siri’s suggested websites by navigating to the settings tab and turning the feature off.
