Vodafone Idea Ltd, India’s Largest Telco Asks Employees to Make Company Stronger at First Town Hall

The approvals have come and the company has finally been formed after months of struggle, first from a valuation point of view and second from legal and governmental intervention. Idea Cellular and Vodafone have finally merged to create Vodafone Idea, India’s largest telecom provider. Despite the status, the company doesn’t cut any slack for its employees, as it reiterated that they need to stay at the top of their game to remain at the top of the Industry.

Vodafone Idea’s first employee town hall:

The newly formed telecom giant had conducted its first employee town hall meeting, last Friday. The meeting was held for over two hours and was streamed across all outlets and offices of the company. The new chief executive, Balesh Sharma, has encouraged employees to make use of the company’s strength and size to grow even more.

He said, “Vodafone Idea is the largest telecom player; it needs to use its size to become strongest and that is possible by giving customers a fantastic experience.” The chief executive also went on to highlight that there is even more potential for the company to grow and the employees must make use of this opportunity, with the use of data growth.

Competition in the Industry:

Despite his encouraging words, the company head also went on to highlight the level of competition that the company was facing in the industry, especially from Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, both of whom are hot on the heels of Vodafone Idea. The company currently has 408 million active users and also 32.2 percent of consumer share in the telecom sector and the company’s head expects that there will be a tough fight if they were to add to this tally or even retain the current market share held by the company.

Last Friday evening the company chairman, Kumar Mangalam Birla also had recorded a message on the new vision and mission that the company has set. This was accompanied with messages from Vittorio Colas, the outgoing chief of Vodafone India, as well as ex-CFO Nick Read.

Moreover, the session also had messages from ex-Idea Cellular chief Himanshu Kapania. The merged entity has also revamped its board and leadership with 13 new executives in the line-up. All of them had a small message for the employees in the meeting and then they also took on questions from the employees after the session.

There were some legitimate concerns from employees that were addressed. The CFO, Akshaya Moondra claims that the company will not be strained in terms of cash. Although, it will be starting off with Rs. 1.09 lakh crore worth of debt, it also has Rs. 19,300 crores as cash on hands. Suvamoy Roy Choudhury, the HR reiterated that there won’t be a clash of cultures and that all employees will be treated fairly and with respect.

The New Marketing Campaign:

In terms of marketing, the company is expected to start its new campaign in the upcoming weeks and we can expect to see new branding gimmicks in the company. According to one of the members of the marketing team “Initial series of campaigns, starting in weeks, will only be on the merger and make the customer aware. As of now, the new company will continue with two-pronged offerings for Idea and Vodafone customers.“
