Qualcomm has once again implicitly extended the olive branch towards Apple. Although previous reports had suggested that Apple is in no mood for an out of court settlement and is tooling up for a trial instead, Qualcomm is confident that the two companies will resolve their issues soon. However, this very well could be a PR move and the chipmaker might just be playing nice. Whatever the reason might be, it would be interesting to see how Apple responds to it.
Frenemies
Back in the day, Qualcomm was a supply chain partner of Apple but things turned sour when Apple accused the chipmaker of charging unjustifiable royalties. Over the years, the two companies have sued each other multiple times and the legal battle spans many countries. Starting this year, Apple has stopped using Qualcomm-made chips for its iPhones and relies completely on Intel’s modem chips instead. Issues further escalated when Qualcomm alleged that the Cupertino giant has shared trade secrets with Intel. But, in a surprising turn of events, Qualcomm’s CEO Steve Mollenkopf has said that the two companies are on the cusp of finding a solution to their problems.
The Feud Is In The Fourth Quarter Of The Game
Mollenkopf also revealed that despite their differences, the two companies do talk and used a sports analogy to explain that the ongoing feud is in its last stages. In fact, the CEO is so confident about dispute resolution that he believes that everything will be sorted out by next year. Furthermore, Mollenkopf expressed his wish to see his company’s 5G modem chips inside the next year’s iPhones, but this might not materialize any time soon as Apple is apparently not going to release 5G-ready iPhones until 2020. This is typical of the iPhone maker, as it is a slow adopter of new wireless technologies. The company likes to wait for new technologies to stabilize before adopting them to avoid running into potential problems such as poor reception.
Check out this year’s iPhones below, none of which come with any Qualcomm-made component:
