Facebook has come out with a new feature that will help it rate a user’s trustworthiness when they report a particular news or a post. This feature is all set to help the company combat its on-going war with fake news that has largely affected the users.
Facebook’s report abuse feature:
The social media platform has given an option to users using which they can flag or report a particular content like a video, post or a news link. This feature has been provided by Facebook to restrict people posting from adhering to its quality standards and also prevent users from circulating fake news.
If a post receives many reports, then it will be reviewed by Facebook’s administrators and will be scrutinized to see if it contains insensitive material, fake news or any content that is in violation against its usage policy. However, the social medial company has seen a rather disturbing trend from users that make the report abuse button redundant.
The report abuse feature seemed to have been abused in itself, as several users seemed to have reported a particular link just because they don’t agree to that content, rather than finding it incorrect or fake. This makes the job of Facebook’s staff all the more harder as they would have to go through a bunch of posts that may be genuine. This just adds to their workload and causes redundancy in the process of reporting unsuitable media content.

New ratings system:
In a bid to counter this, the social media company has now introduced a new rating system for its users. Now users will be rated for their trustworthiness when they report information. When a user is found to be incorrectly reporting a link or a post, they will be assigned a lower score on the rating system.
Basically the rating system is an in-built mechanism, which will be available to Facebook’s staff and will build the trustworthiness of a user. The more number of wrong reporting a user makes the more negative scores that the user will receive. This will hopefully provide a sort of priority to the administrative staff at Facebook, who can then look at reports from the “trustworthy” users.
In an interview with the Washington Post, product manager at Facebook who deals with misinformation, Tessa Lyons commented that “It was not uncommon for people to tell us something is false simply because they disagree with the premise of a story or they’re intentionally trying to target a particular publisher.” The Post also went on to add that the company is devising a ratings system going from ‘zero to one’ that will build a user’s reputation.
Not much information has been divulged about the rating system including how the ratings actually take place, how will it be used and if the ratings will be made available to the users themselves or will be kept only for the internal usage of Facebook staff. By not disclosing more about the rating system the company may be alienating several of its users who may feel insecure about the ratings system.
On the other hand once the rating system is out, the bad actors will now formulate new means to circumvent the system and somehow overcome it. So it will be interesting to see how Facebook goes about this.
