Gesture Based Navigations Land On Google Powered Smartwatches With The Wear OS 2.1 Update That Is Now Being Rolled Out

Google is now rolling out the Wear OS 2.1 update for all the smartwatches that currently run the Wear OS 2.0. Although a new OS update doesn’t make up for the fact that Google is unlikely to announce a Pixel smartwatch at its upcoming hardware event, the nifty additions could sure bring some solace.

Even though the update is now being pushed out, its staged nature might require you to wait. Since there is a high probability that the update will only be sent out to a few regions initially, it will be weeks before some users get the update. Overzealous users can manually look for the update by navigating to System Updates on their Wear OS smartwatches.

Simpler Interface and Nifty Functions

The latest update brings with itself improved access to notifications, new gesture controls, increased integration with Google Assistant, and a slew of health monitoring features. All the new functionalities are just a swipe away, thanks to Wear OS 2.1’s gesture navigation.

Swiping up would enable you to see your notifications and respond from within them using the freshly baked smart reply feature. Swipe down and you will be directed to useful features such as Find My Phone and the Google Pay app. Swiping left will land you inside the Google Fit app which now comes with added features called Heart Points and Move Minutes that were co-created with the American Heart Association and the World Health Organization.

Proactive Google Assistant

The Wear OS 2.1 also comes with an improved Google Assistant which provides personalized suggestions. Just swipe right on your smartwatch to access the Google Assistant which can keep you updated with information such as traffic reports, weather forecasts, flight status, and meeting reminders. Additionally, it will encourage you to try out features that you may not have utilized before.

The Wear OS 2.1 extends the features that came with the Android Wear 2.0 that was launched more than a year ago. To recap, the Android Wear 2.0 introduced custom watch faces, an app drawer that was vertically scrollable, and support for Google Pay. It also enabled users to install Standalone Apps, reducing reliance on smartphones.
