Facebook owned, WhatsApp Messenger, has been getting some nice new feature to the Android version of its app. Now, the latest WhatsApp for Android beta is getting another new feature that brings Picture-in-Picture mode to the chats.
If you are a WhatsApp user who receives a lot of videos on WhatsApp, then this new feature will interest you. The previous WhatsApp beta update for Android brought a very useful feature as well. In the last update, users finally got the ability to swipe to reply within a chat.
Previously, the swipe to reply feature was only available on iOS, where you could simply swipe on a message to reply to it. On Android, however, you had to tap and hold on the message, then type on the keyboard. With the previous update, you can just swipe and reply. WhatsApp: Picture-in-Picture Mode
In the latest WhatsApp Beta for Android, version 2.18.310, the company has added a picture-in-picture mode and it has lived up to the advertisements. Whenever you receive a video from YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, or streaming site Streamable, you will now be able to view it in a pop-up view. This allows you to continue chatting, and viewing the video at the same time. All you have to do, is tap on the video and it will directly open in a hovering box.
If you are not able to see this feature on your device, then you should backup your messages, and reinstall the latest WhatsApp beta. The feature should be available after you update. When you watch a video using picture-in-picture mode, it will say so on the link. You can move the pop-up video box around, and adjust the size as well.
There is, however, an issue with the feature. As soon as you exit the chat you’re viewing the video in, the PiP stops working. This is apparently a bug, as the same works fine on iOS devices. Hopefully, the bug will be fixed with the next update to the app. As of now, the feature works on all Android 4.4 and above devices.
As mentioned above, the feature also supports videos shared via Facebook or Instagram. A report also states that the feature will work on streamable videos.
WhatsApp: Other Upcoming Features
The cross-platform instant messaging has also been rumoured to receive several other features. One of them, is a new Dark Mode within the app. This can be useful for people who like to have darker elements in their chat. Or if you’re using the app at night, a dark mode will put less strain on your eyes.

There have been reports about WhatsApp bringing ads to the service. And this could happen very soon, as Facebook does have the intention to monetise the messaging app. It has been reported that ads would be placed on the status page of WhatsApp. It would be similar to how ads appear on Instagram. The co-founder of WhatsApp, Jan Koum, recently left Facebook dus to this very reason.
