Samsung Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 9 start receiving December security update

The Samsung Galaxy Note 10 and Note 9 devices have started receiving the December 2019 security patch. The update brings with it the security patch only and no new functionality. The update for the Galaxy Note 10 is version N97*FXXS1ASKB and is available in 25 European markets only. There is no information on when the update for the Note 10 will come to India. The Note 9 is getting the update in Germany only as of now with the update number N960FXXS4CSK. There is no information on when the update will come to India. Those using a Note 10 or a Note 9 can go into the settings app on the smartphone and selecting Software update. If the update is available, users can download and install it.

In other Samsung news, the company has filed a trademark for a new sensor called ‘Bright Night’. The filing suggests that it will be used in smartphones and tablets. Speculations suggest that the sensor will be used for low light photography. Leaks and rumours are abuzz about the features coming to the Samsung Galaxy S11 family of devices and one can expect the new sensor to make its debut on the new devices.

Samsung has also filed a patent for a feature called ‘Space Zoom’. Once again, details about the feature are not yet known, except for the fact that it will offer lossless zoom. It is possible that the feature is aimed at helping with Astrophotography, a much-touted feature in the Pixel 4. The upcoming Samsung phone is tipped to feature a quad-rear camera setup with support for 5x optical zoom. It is also tipped to feature a 2nd Gen 108MP sensor. To recall, Samsung unveiled the 108MP ISOCELL Bright HMX sensor in August this year. The sensor was developed in partnership with Xiaomi and is used in the Mi Note 10 smartphone.

Face recognition systems reportedly active at Chaayos without the option to opt-out

According to a report by Medianama, a popular tea outlet in India Chaayos is gathering users face data without giving customers the option to opt-out of it. The popular chain is doing this as an alternative to OTP. In the UI of the display where one has to register, there is no option to opt-out of facial recognition. There is only a “start” option. There are a lot of questions that are left unanswered. For example how long is the data stored? Where is it stored? How long is it stored for? What other uses can Chhayos use the facial data for? Medianama points out that “In case the police approaches a Chaayos outlet to investigate a case, will the company share this facial data with them?” There is also no assurance on the safety of this data being collected.

Nikhil Pahwa, founder and editor of MediaNama said, “I was buying tea and didn’t even notice what was on the screen, and suddenly, the screen showed me. Remember, all this is happening without facial recognition norms, or a privacy law in India.”

In a series of tweets, Nikhil Pahwa says, “Issues: 1. No terms & conditions displayed.  2. Consent isn't real when there's no opt out option.  3. We don't know if Chaayos will sell this data/gives itself the right to.  4. We don't know what kind of other data this facial info is being linked to. We don't know what kind of info this data will be compared with from other external databases.  5. Biometric info is a permanent username+password. Should not be used. 6. This is sensitive personal info.+”

Chaayos terms and conditions page says the following which is quite alarming. It reads, “Unless a law prohibits us from excluding or limiting our liability, we are not liable for any loss you incur in connection with Login service, or your instructions, or any unauthorised transactions through or in connection with the Chaayos Face Login service. You agree to undertake any direct or indirect claims, legal procedures, legal liabilities, loses, damages arising from our actions in accordance with your orders or notices and all expenses (including all legal costs) which are of reasonable amount whatsoever and howsoever caused that may arise to be reasonably incurred by us in providing Chaayos Face Login service to you. And you promise to indemnify us, upon our request, for the losses and expenses that we have suffered”. You can read the complete terms and conditions here.

According to the source, Chai Point has had a similar system in place since 2018. The function of the system is the same, to remove the need for OTP.

Samsung Galaxy Note10 and Note9 phones are already getting December security patch OTA

Yes, you read that correctly, December security patches, even though, as of writing this, it is still technically November. You won't hear us complain, though, especially since Samsung kind of managed the same feat for the November Galaxy S10 security patch, which started seeding in late October. If this becomes a habit, the Korean giant definitely deserves some praise. As things currently stand, Galaxy Note10 and Note10+ users in about 25 Europe markets should be able to fetch an N97*FXXS1ASKB OTA package, thorough the phone's update menu. Via Finder

The easiest way is to use the Mac keyboard shortcut view secret files in the Finder browser. To show your MacOS secret files

Until you start to doubt the shortcut works for the MacOS view of hidden files. You just need to locate the locations where all the hidden files are kept by Mac.

Via Terminal

Vivo hosting event for V-series launch on December 9, could be the Vivo V17

Vivo is hosting an event on December 9 for a new smartphone launch. The company has sent out invites for the same and it’s largely expected to be the Vivo V17. The smartphone was launched in Russia earlier this week and rocks a dewdrop notch and a diamond-shaped camera module.

The same smartphone was also launched in the Philippines as the Vivo S1 Pro. The smartphone rocks the Snapdragon 665 along and a 48MP rear camera and a 32MP selfie camera on the front. There’s also a 4,500mAh battery to boot. In contrast, the Vivo V17 Pro, launched earlier this year rocks dual selfie cameras in a pop-up module along with a 48MP quad-camera setup at the back.

The invite that Vivo sent out confirms it is a V-series smartphone launching on December 9. That gives more fuel to the rumour that it’s the Vivo V17. Interestingly, the invite shows a hole-punch camera in the graphic. A recent report also tipped Vivo is planning to launch the Vivo V17 with a hole-punch display in India. The report also claimed Vivo will ditch the waterdrop notch for a more premium look.

Twitter is testing Reddit-esq nesting conversations

Looks like Twitter will be taking a leaf out of Reddit and is testing ‘nested’ replies. The feature was spotted by app researcher, Jane Manchun Wong. The new feature aims to make it easier to follow conversations. It was noted that the feature was first seen on Twitter’s beta testing app, Twttr and should roll out to the general public sometime in 2020.

A Twitter spokesperson confirmed to TechCrunch that the new feature is a part of the company’s broader plans to bring feature from Twttr to the Twitter app. However, the spokesperson also noted that not all features discovered by Wong would be a part of the launch of the global version of the app. Just the “best parts”.

Twitter continues working on Conversation Tree now with the ability to focus a specific tweet, even from a permalink pic.twitter.com/CVadSqbFDP

In related news, it was recently reported that Twitter planned to remove accounts that haven’t signed in for six months or more. The plan is scheduled to start from December 11, but a spokesperson said that closing said accounts may take months. The move is aimed at cleaning up the platform and present more accurate, credible information that is reliable. Twitter has also said that it will find a way to memorialise accounts of people who have died but didn’t really say anything beyond that. So hopefully, we will not lose accounts of some of our loved ones who passed away a few years ago.

Apple could bundle AirPods with 2020 iPhones: Report

The Apple AirPods are one of the best-selling Truly Wireless Earphones in the market today. Now, according to a new report by DigiTimes, Apple is planning to bundle AirPods with the upcoming iPhone 2020 models. The report also mentions Samsung and Xiaomi are also planning on doing the same.

The reports cites industry sources behind the scoop, and considering the patchy reputation of the publication in predicting developments, it’s better to take this report with a pinch of salt given the high asking price of AirPods.

Apple sells the AirPods for more than Rs 10,00 and it’s difficult to imagine the company simply ditching a major source of revenue and bundling the product with the iPhones of the future. But then again, Apple introduced the AirPods Pro a few weeks back which has been selling out everywhere and Apple has already decided to increase production.

If the AirPods Pro becomes Apple’s premium play, the AirPods can indeed come bundled with the 2020 iPhones. You can surely expect the price of iPhones to shoot up even more, if that’s the case. Apple also might look to modernise the iPhone packaging. So far, Apple has been bundling Lightning EarPods with every new iPhone and bundling AirPods could be a way to catch up with changing times.

LG UX 90 showcased, coming to LG G8X ThinQ in the future

LG’s new UI is out and the company has made some serious new changes to how LG smartphones will look from the inside. Called LG UX 9.0, the new interface improves upon the aesthetics of UX 8.0, and introduces new features to make usability of a LG smartphone much better.

LG phones were long overdue of an UI overhaul considering its phones received a lot of flak over its choice of UI aesthetics. That’s soon to change and by the looks of it, LG has taken big inspiration from Samsung’s OneUI.

The company released an YouTube video showcasing the changes and in the video description, it says the UI will first come to the LG G8X ThinQ at some point in time.

LG UX 9.0 incorporates bubbles everywhere with rounded corners. There’s more space between elements while the fonts are much bolder. The bottom of the screen will house a lot of actionable items, which should be easily reachable by the thumb. The new UI also brings a dark mode which can be scheduled and a new tablet UI for better multitasking.

By the looks of it, LG seems to have borrowed some aesthetics from iOS and some from Samsung’s OneUI. But then again, everything these days seems to be a copy of the other. What’s more important is that the UI should make using LG phones better. It looks more modern, for one.

Google Assistant Ambient Mode Starts Rolling Out To Android Users

Google Assistant Ambient Mode Starts Rolling Out To Android Users

The ‘ Ambient Mode ‘ of Google Assistant finally comes to smartphones. It mode, first unveiled at I / O 2019, transforms your Android smartphone or tablet into a smart display by displaying calendar data, current weather, updates, reminders, music controls, and smart home controls.

The Ambient Mode also transforms the screen of the phone into a digital photo frame that takes photos from Google Photos when users don’t use any of these apps.

For selecting Android phones running on Android 8.0 Oreo and above, this feature is available.

The idea is to make your mobile more useful by allowing you to see photos from Google, play music, power your smart home devices, and more while loading.

The functionality began rolling out to Sony Xperia, Nokia, Transsion, and Xiaomi devices, selecting Lenovo tablets running Android 8.1 or newer, as announced.

Google yesterday announced Ambient Mode via a Tweet and YouTube video rather than a blog post or press announcement.

It presents a proactive Google Assistant in the video clip for Android Ambient Mode, showing you your agenda for the day as well as shortcuts for setting alarms or controlling smart devices.

And when nothing really needs to be done, it can display the time in large letters that are very noticeable and even show off your pictures in a slideshow.

Where other devices may be getting Ambient Mode in the future is unclear, but the video does say that Ambient Mode is deeply integrated into Android and is not a stand-alone experience, so it may seem that it will be available on more Android devices soon.

Realme X2 Pro Might Soon Get a 6GB RAM + 64GB Storage Option in India

A little while ago, Realme launched the Realme X2 Pro in India. Unlike its Chinese counterpart, the Realme X2 Pro that got launched in the country came in only two memory combinations – 8GB/128GB and 12GB/256GB as the company skipped the 6GB/64GB variant for India. As it turns out,  the variant that got left out might be coming to India after all as the same has been spotted on the Realme India official website.

Realme could launch the 6GB/64GB variant of the Realme X2 Pro in India

realme x2 pro 6gb + 64gb variant india

As seen in the image, the Realme India website has listed the 6GB and 64GB memory options on the Realme X2 Pro product page. This could very well mean that we might be getting some news in the coming days.

As far as the specifications of the device are concerned, the Realme X2 Pro features a 6.5 inches Fluid AMOLED FHD+ display which comes with a 1080 x 2400 pixels resolution and a 20:9 aspect ratio. The pixel density is 403 pixels per inch (ppi). One of the prime highlights of the Realme X2 Pro is its 90Hz refresh rate display.

Speaking of dimensions, the Realme X2 Pro measures 161×75.7×8.7mm and weighs in at 199 grams.

Powering the Realme X2 Pro is an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ chipset. The processor is coupled with 8GB/12GB of RAM and 128GB/256GB of internal storage (as of now, the 6GB/64GB option might be right around the corner). You can expand the internal storage further with the help of an external SD card.

As far as the cameras of the device are concerned, the Realme X2 Pro sports a quad rear camera setup (64MP + 13MP + 8MP + 2MP) and a 16MP selfie snapper which is embedded underneath a waterdrop notch.

A 4,000mAh battery fuels the Realme X2 Pro. As claimed by the company, the battery of the Realme X2 Pro charges from 0% to 100% in around 35 minutes owing to the fact that the Realme X2 Pro comes with a 55W fast charger.

Coming to the OS, the Realme X2 Pro comes with Android 9 Pie out of the box with ColorOS 6 on top of it. That, however, is going to change pretty soon as Realme has already started the ColorOS 7 beta testing program for the device in India.

Deal: Sony Xperia 10 is less than half its usual price at just $169.99 unlocked

Sony unveiled the mid-range Xperia 10 at MWC this February alongside the Xperia 1 flagship. Like that high-end model, the Xperia 10 also has a supertall screen with a 21:9 aspect ratio, making for a pretty unique look (especially when you add in Sony's blocky design language). While you may not watch a lot of 21:9 video content on your smartphone, this aspect ratio may also make you scroll less inside any apps that rely on that vertical action a lot - like, say Facebook, or Instagram. The display is definitely the Xperia 10's main claim to fame and its clear differentiator from the...

Twitter To Remove Accounts Inactive For Over 6 Months

On December 11, Twitter will permanently delete inactive accounts that have not been in use for more than six months. The action will also have an impact on the deceased’s accounts.

Nevertheless, the accounts will not be deleted at once. It is said that the process will take place over several months.

“As part of our commitment to serve the public conversation, we’re working to clean up inactive accounts to present more accurate, credible information people can trust across Twitter. Part of this effort is encouraging people to actively log-in and use Twitter when they register an account, as stated in our inactive accounts policy,” Twitter Spokeperson said in a statement.

With an alert, the organization has started to send emails to inactive account owners: sign in by December 11th, or your profile will be history and your password will be up for grabs.

“We have begun proactive outreach to many accounts who have not logged into Twitter in over six months to inform them that their accounts may be permanently removed due to prolonged inactivity,” said Twitter.

Twitter is not the only company to take action against users who are inactive. Yahoo released thousands of Yahoo IDs inactive for at least 12 months back in 2013. Google also has an inactive Gmail account option.
