Oppo’s sub-brand, Realme, just announced its second generation of affordable Android smartphone, the Realme 2. With the clear intention of competing with entry-level Android devices like Xiaomi’s Redmi 5, the Oppo Realme 2 is certainly an interesting smartphone.
Oppo Realme 1 was a capable Android device in its own right. The smartphone managed to embed several features that were not usually seen in affordable Android mobile phones. Oppo appears to have listened to its audience and attempted to tweak the second generation of Realme. With the Realme 2 officially launched, let’s see how the second generation Realme 2 differs from its predecessor, the Realme 1.
Realme 1 vs Realme 2: Price in India
Oppo has surprisingly maintained the price of the Relame 2 exactly as that of its predecessor. Both the generations of the smartphone, as well the two variants, cost, exactly the same. The Realme 2 comes in two versions with the base 3GB RAM + 32GB internal memory version costing Rs.8,990 and the top-end 4GB RAM + 64GB internal memory variant costs Rs. 10,990.
The Realme 1 with the 3GB/32GB and the 4GB/64GB configuration costs the same. However, the Realme 1 also had a rather premium variant with 6GB of RAM along with 128GB internal storage that costs Rs. 13,799. This configuration is not available in Realme 2.

Realme 1 vs Realme 2: MediaTek Helio P60 vs. Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 SoC
Surprisingly, for the processor that powers the Realme 2 smartphone, Oppo has opted for a completely different company. The Realme 1 packed a 12nm MediaTek Helio P60 octa-core processor clocked at 2.0 GHz with an ARM Mali-G72 MP3 GPU. Needless to say, this was an excellent choice for an affordable smartphone.
However, for the Oppo Realme 2, the company has chosen the entry-level Qualcomm SDM450 Snapdragon 450 octa-core Processor. The SoC is clocked at 1.8GHz, and paired with Adreno 506 GPU. This is certainly not a bad choice by any means. However, the Snapdragon 450 is certainly not as fast as the Helio P60. Still, this chipset could offer slightly better runtime and battery endurance.
Realme 1 vs Realme 2: Same Size Screen But With Difference in Resolution And Notch
The Realme 1 surprised smartphone buyers by featuring a large 6-inch screen with resolution of 1080 x 2160 pixels. The Realme 2, has a slightly taller display measuring 6.2-inches diagonally. However, it disappointingly sports a resolution of 720 x 1520 pixels.
In simple words, the Oppo Realme 1 has a 1080p display, while the Realme 2 has a 720p display. Moreover, this change in resolution has a significant impact on the pixel density. Against Realme 1’s 402 PPI, the Realme 2 has a mere 271 PPI pixel density. This difference should be clearly visible when the displays are compared side-by-side. However, the Realme 2 sports a notched display that many may find appealing.
Realme 1 vs Realme 2: Battery Capacity
The Realme 2 wins over its predecessor in the battery department. The Realme 1 had a 3,410mAh battery pack. It was refreshing to see an affordable Android smartphone sporting such a relatively large unit.
But Oppo managed to up the game by packing a 4,230mAh battery pack in the Realme 2 smartphone. With about 25 percent more battery, Realme 2 buyers can certainly stretch their usage significantly more than the Realme 1.
Realme 1 vs Realme 2: Biometric Authentication
Another area in which the Realme 2 surges ahead of the first generation of Relame devices is the presence of a dedicated fingerprint scanner. The Realme 2 packs a non-circular fingerprint scanner on the back of the device. Oppo has deployed an interestingly shaped fingerprint scanner. It appears oval in shape. The speed and efficacy of the fingerprint scanner, and the ergonomics of the oval shape, depends to be seen.
It is quite obvious that one of the biggest drawbacks of Realme 1, the otherwise well-balanced affordable Android smartphone, was the lack of a fingerprint scanner. Oppo may have eliminated the biometric authentication to save production costs, but its absence became a sore point. The smartphone does offer Face Unlock though.
Realme 1 vs Realme 2: Single Rear Camera vs Dual Camera Units
One of the biggest appeal of Realme 2 is the presence of a dual camera unit on the back of the device. The smartphone packs a 13MP+2MP setup at the rear with support for PDAF. The 13-megapixel shooter gets an aperture of f/2.2 and uses a 5P lens as well. The secondary camera is a depth sensor. The selfie camera spots a 8MP sensor with the same f/2.2 aperture.
The Realme 1 only has a single 13MP camera sensor on the back. It is accompanied by an LED Flash. There is no secondary unit to capture depth information and effectively offer the highly popular bokeh effect. It does have AI-powered features like AI Scene recognition. On the front, the Realme 1 has the same 8MP snapper with AI Shot and an f/2.2 aperture lens.

Realme 1 vs Realme 2: Conclusion
Oppo has priced the Realme 1 and the Realme 2 exactly the same. The Realme 2 is certainly a good smartphone. It packs all the relevant upgrades, including a larger battery, fingerprint scanner, and dual camera unit.
However, it sports only a 720p display, which our hands-on impressions didn’t find particularly lacking. Some could find the choice of Snapdragon 450 against Helio P60 rather strange, but Qualcomm has regularly improved energy efficiency, and the SDM450 is no exception. Both the smartphones ship with Oppo’s own ColorOS v5.1 which is built around Android 8.1 Oreo. And the company has promised an upgrade to Android 9 Pie soon.
