Facebook’s Much Awaited Messenger Design Overhauled With Dark Mode Has Started Rolling Out

It is heartening to see more and more apps embracing Google’s new Material Design, which is a design approach that advocates a neat, minimalist look with an abundance of white space. Following in the footsteps of Microsoft, which recently revamped Skype, Facebook has now started rolling out a new design update for its Messenger app.

Facebook Messenger Going Minimalistic In Design

Demoed during the F8 2018 conference, the redesign seeks to remove the unnecessary clutter and streamline the communication experience, providing a quick access to the most frequently used features. The dashboard has now been simplified, with a neat looking search box perched at the top and a navigation bar that only displays three icons for chats, contacts, and the Explore tab. The chat and camera button can now be found at the top right corner of the app.

The larger interface elements are non-ambiguous and quite user-friendly. The chat threads and the contact management page have also been refreshed, featuring a more customisable iconography. The chat colours look heavily inspired by Skype. The features that are seldom used, such as businesses and games shortcuts, have been shifted to the Explore tab.

The update is initiated from the server-side, so you cannot force install it if you haven’t received it yet. This means that updating your Messenger app via the Play Store will not work and all you can do is wait. Downloading an APK or joining a beta is not going to help either. As mentioned before, the dark mode should be there but no screenshots of it can currently be seen on the internet. Dark mode options have received a lot of popularity recently and even Google has introduced it on the YouTube app. Apparently, the feature is very situational and the implied benefits can vary with each individual. If you use a smartphone with an OLED display, you can hope to see improvements in battery life because of the increase in black pixels.
